What a slap in the face to the loved ones the killer murdered. What a broken system.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime...id=hplocalnews

Quote:
A California inmate condemned to death nearly four decades ago for killing a police officer died Friday of natural causes at age 71, prison officials said.

James Odle died at an outside hospital 37 years after he was sent to the nation's largest death row at San Quentin State Prison, which has 709 condemned inmates.

California hasn't executed anyone since 2006. Gov. Gavin Newsom has halted executions so long as he is governor.

The murderer got 37 years of life that his victim did not.

The system is broken.

Near me in 2019 a cop serving a warrant on a career criminal found him hiding in the attic of a house and both the officer and his dog was shot. The dog survived the officer did not. It was big news and the guy still has not come to trial. The attorney for the criminal is citing that his client will not be able to get a fair trial locally so it has been pushed back again and again.

It seems pretty cut and dry. A man in the attic, a gun, a dog and a dead cop. They didn't shot themselves.

There are just some cases that do not need to drag on. 37 years on death row. That is not much of a life but still better than the one his victim had.

It’s called due process. Have a problem with how long it takes to put a man to death, change the laws. The laws are there to (try) to protect the innocent

37 years on death row? WTH? This inmate lived better in the hole than our veterans, who are, all too often, relegated to a life of begging and sleeping in our streets. THAT is deplorable.

I wouldn't call it "due process" since the actions of the Governor's executive order has interfered with carrying out the sentence of many, many on death row.

Some of the more notable people on death row in CA:

https://www.abc10.com/article/news/c...b-84a6cec396ac

An examples:

Lonnie Franklin: "A serial killer nicknamed the “Grim Sleeper,” Franklin was convicted in 2016 for the killings of nine women and a teenage girl in Los Angeles dating to the 1980s. He was linked at trial to 14 slayings, including four women he wasn’t charged with killing. Police have said Franklin, now 66, may have had as many as 25 victims."

Vincent Brothers:"A former high school vice principal, Brothers was convicted of killing his wife, their three young children and his mother-in-law. Prosecutors said he tried to create an alibi by flying to Columbus, Ohio, with the pretext of visiting his brother. He then drove his rental car to Bakersfield, California, to kill his family and returned to Ohio. Now 57, he’s been on San Quentin’s death row since 2007."

Put them down!

That's where people who argue that it's cheaper to execute prisoners than to keep them in prison all their lives lose the argument. These cases often drag out for decades and cost the government millions in legal fees.

I'm against the death penalty anyway.

The appeals process is a joke. Years ago, to appeal a verdict you had to be able allege something specific in the trial proceedings that wasn't done according to the rules in place. Nowadays disagreeing with a verdict is apparently sufficient grounds for appeal.

I would guess most on death row deserves their death sentence. Even without roadblocks the process to put someone to death takes decades. Appeals are there to help protect the innocent even the if the guilty take advantage to delay. You’d hate to be rushed to death if you were innocent.

dying in prison after 37 years seems like a very worthy sentence for any crime. the death penalty, to me, is far less of a penalty than being imprisoned for the rest of one's life without parole.
