The thing that harmful to society, is your government and social media deciding what you should believe.
That is a way too simplistic view.
Government, schools, religion, parents, and social media has a duty to present facts and morally acceptable principles. You don't see the government advocating for marital affairs, or schools teaching Satanism, or parents teaching their kids to be bullies (at least not the good parents). Why is social media held to a different standard? What's next? We include QAnon conspiracies in the classrooms because we don't want schools to "decide what kids believe?"
No one is deciding what you should believe. If you want to believe there is a secret cabal of pedophiles out to get Trump then you are going to believe it regardless of what social media does.
The real question is whether crazy lunatic conspiracies, racists rants, and fake news belong in social media even though they are absolutely the realm of the crazies and racists (aka right-wing thoughts). The question is should the social media allow the voices of the crazies to be included in their platform.

These crazy ideas are overwhelmingly from the right. The left is not saying there is a sex ring at the basement of a pizza parlor with no basement, or the earth is flat, or Sandy Hook is staged, or chem trail exists, or there would be a "storm" that killed all the politicians they hate, or Biden and fellow Democrats would be rounded up on Inauguration Day. Saying the right-wing is crazy is like saying five-year-olds are rowdy. It's not really a broad stroke.
Yes, they do, and we get them constantly from sources like NBC, AP, NPR, NYT, and WaPo.
When they do, it's usually because they report on fake news spread by the right-wing and the news usually provide facts to counter balance their reports.
Like when they reported that Trump said windmills cause cancer or the right-wing movement to prove the Sandy Hook is staged, etc.
But the right wants to use social media to spread their crazies unchecked. It's not blatantly obvious that it's ethical to allow it. There may be a case to be made that the lies and the crazy conspiracies represent the thought of this group of people, but then how crazy is too crazy? Or do we just allow all crazy right-wing ideas to be posted unchecked?
