The electric car fad is greenwashing. They cost more energy to make. The battery materials are more limited than oil. Battery fires can be impossible to extinguish. But giving up cars is un-American, so excuses to avoid walking must be found. GM probably knows it doesn't have that much time left, but is willing to follow the fad for a few more rounds of subsidies and bailouts.
The good news is you don't have to stop progress !!! If you are the federal gov. you can't buy GM vehicles made in China !!! According to China Joe's EO on buy American !!!
GM is particularly concerned with the Chinees market where it makes most of its profits !!!
China was the largest single target market for General Motors in 2019. During the 2019 fiscal year, the Detroit company and its associations sold more than three million motor vehicles to customers in China, the world’s largest automobile market.
Then their decision to phase out ICEs also indicates that there is an enormous anticipated increase in demand for EVs in China.
After I read your message, I tried to call my 90-year-old dad and rip him a new one for 1) not having a charging station at 65-year-old home and 2) for selfishly living in the quiet, rural area rather than an urban city with charging stations, closer to me (I don't think there is one charging station in the 230 miles between our homes).
He didn't answer. He is probably still recovering from his near-death experience over the weekend after receiving the COVID vaccine. ****ing white privilege.
Regarding his recent health crisis, I think EMS certainly can afford to take 30-minute charging breaks between patient deliveries. Hell, dad had plenty of time. They could have charged up mid-delivery.
As electric vehicles become more widespread, so will charging stations. Your dad will eventually have plenty of charging stations near him in his rural area, it's just a matter of time.
When gasoline powered cars first started becoming widespread ~110 years ago, there weren't gas stations all over the place. As cars became more common, so did filling stations, eventually reaching remote rural areas. Same will happen with charging stations.
Not until the functionality and practicality of EV's surpasses ICE vehicles. Don't tell me what I need or want. I am tired of Fascist Progressives (current Democrats) doing that.
The market should organically drive any change not government or government manipulation of markets and society through punitive taxes, mandates and regulations.
This thread is about a private company - General Motors - deciding to do this on their own.
Part of what I hate about electric cars is that they're silent. My loud V8 exhaust is part of what I love about my car, makes me feel alive. If they can make an electric Camaro that still sounds like a Camaro (even if it is fake), then we'll talk
That is definitely one thing I look forward to in electric cars: No more loud mufflers and engines. There is such a thing as noise pollution, a fact which appears to be lost on some people.
I sold GM automobiles for a couple of months in 1986, and a lot of customers didn't want anything to do with a front wheel drive vehicle. A couple of them flat stated they would quit driving if they couldn't get a car with a full length driveshaft and rear wheel drive, and predicted that GM would go broke if they tried to change over completely. They were wrong all the way around.
GM plans to eliminate all passenger vehicles from its lineup that use gasoline and diesel by 2035, and offer nothing but electrics. The change that has been predicted for the last 25 years is on the way. There are a lot of people now who are saying that they will never give up their petroleum powered vehicles, and that GM will go broke if they try to change over completely. I personally think they will be proven wrong as well. GM will be around long after all of the naysayers are gone. You can't stop progress.

Car owners will have charging stations in their home garages. Convenient.

That's you. To me, nothing beats the burble and rumble of a V8 engine

Yes, that too. Currently, you can't fill your car's gas tank at home, can you.
