I'm see a lot of people talking about the fight for independence. This must be the current left-wing talking point. Where do you guys get this stuff from? Every time there's some new political issue, left-wing people all start saying the same exact things. Also, I suspect that many of these people spent their summer tearing down statues of the men who fought for independence.
The question long has been that DC residents have effectively no power over themselves, unlike any other State or territory. Even Puerto Rico has more autonomy.
Yes, it's a good move. If one believes in that old maxim, "No taxation without representation".
actually the city of DC has the most representation of anycity/state/territory...they have 100 senators and 335(?) representatives that work there and represent them
they have bookoo representation.... which means they should also have the highest tax rate within the states..... "too little taxation, yet bookoo representation"
The Constitution requires a federal district, to a maximum of 10 sq miles. It does no describe a minimum size.
correct a MAXIMUN size of 10sq mi...for a FEDERAL DISTRICT ...not a state, not designed to be a state...CONSTITUTIONALLY DESIGNED to be a FEDERAL district, answering to NO STATE...… it would be unconstitutional to make DC a state...
but then again, what the heck...as Obama said, the constitution is an outdated, antiquated piece of paper
There are over 5 million people in the Washington, DC metro area. 700,000 live in the District itself. That's about 14%. Anyone in DC who is so hungry for "representation" can join the vast majority of their fellow metro area residents and head for neighboring states.
who were the people that willingly moved INTO the District, but didn't know they weren't a state and thus didn't have Congresspeople?
It's not 1776 anymore. The Founders sure as hell didn't imagine the capital being a metropolis of millions of people like it is now. Also, its use as a buffer zone for the security of the federal government is obsolete. Why the far right insists on denying them representation while decrying the excesses of the federal government is ridiculous. They should at least be returned to Maryland.
To the GOP, a majority-Democrat district with no representation is not a problem. It's a start.

BS. Many Republicans are fine with returning most, if not all of DC to Maryland.
Its making a city into a state that is the issue.
