Hey, while we're at it, let's just dump the whole "income tax" idea.
Either you have endowed rights that are untaxable, or you have government privileges which are taxable.
So how did earning a living become a government privilege subject to an excise tax?
Was it after St FDR confiscated all the lawful money and left us with worthless IOUs?
Then it was not by consent, but by fraud and coercion. Bad excuse for a tax.
Let's abolish the whole thing.

Why has Donald Trump fought so hard to keep his tax returns secret?

I keep mine secret. Why shouldn't he?

It's no one's business. He probably also understands that many will be simply jealous.

Whatever it is - it's clearly worse than anything I can imagine, since he's fought so hard.

I often thought that there is something tying him to illicit goings-on with Russia, maybe even treasonous, but now I think it must be even worse than that.

No one running for that level of public office spends that much effort hiding his personal financial information if he doesn't have something major to hide.

We all know Trump is hiding very shady, most likely illegal activity, and that he more than likely used the presidential office to make a decent amount of money for his family over the last four years.

Even if he's totally kosher with how he's filed his taxes (not all that likely, given his track record) - Trump probably wants to hide the likelihood that

1) His income/assets are likely to be LESS than he's bragged about

2) the effective rate that he pays is quite low, much lower than is available to most ordinary people

We got a taste of that with the NYT reporting on his taxes last year or so.

"Iff you haff nothink to hide, then why do you keep it secret?"

TRANSLATION: We have no legal means to compel you to open up for tax forms, and no particular reason to think you've committed a crime. So we want to go on a fishing expedition, looking at every bit of your life in hopes we eventually find something somehow, and then destroy you for it.

""Show me the man, and eventually I'll find you a crime."

"We all know that...." - the standard "evidence" used by the Soviet government organ Pravda to pretend somebody has done something wrong.

Nice try, but no cigar.
