I’m semi-Republican, but I agree with you on this one. Religious zealot Repubs seem to be some of the worst closet cases out there.

I wish R’s would start recognizing that being gay is real, weed is no worse than alcohol, and Roe v. Wade is never going to be overturned.

if smoking and alcohol, which are toxins, are legal, there should be no reason that mj isn't as well.

Because the bill was introduced by Democrats. If Dems are for it, Republicans are against. I swear, if Democrats introduced the Bill of Rights today, Republicans would unanimously oppose it.

Can't stand cigarette smoke or someone's house or apartment smelling like a bar. Same for the stench of pot.

Do what ever you want in the privacy of YOUR own home. No one else should have to experience your day.

Almost every lawmaker vote at the state and national level in this country is baldfacedly partisan nowadays.

It is political suicide to not be in lockstep with your party, even against the will of ones loyal constituents, because the constituents are loyal whether you stab them in the back or the front. Especially on the Right these days.

American "democracy" is no longer a beacon to the world. We have become the joke.

And as befits Republican tradition, if it's not their problem, it doesn't exist.

I find myself siding with Republicans more in the last few years than I have in the past, but their continued opposition to marijuana legalization baffles me.

Examining the effects of legalizing marijuana in Colorado and Washington on clearance rates: a quasi-experimental design

Quote:
The synthetic control method is useful for aggregate-level crime policy analysis when experimental methods are not available. The argument that the police would do a better job at reducing serious crime and/or arresting serious criminal offenders if they were not preoccupied with marijuana users is unfounded in this analysis.
The Cannabis Effect on Crime: Time-Series Analysis of Crime in Colorado and Washington State

Quote:
Our results suggest that marijuana legalization and sales have had minimal to no effect on major crimes in Colorado or Washington. We observed no statistically significant long-term effects of recreational cannabis laws or the initiation of retail sales on violent or property crime rates in these states.
Conclusion: unfortunately, the net effect of legalizing Marijuana didn't appreciably enhance law enforcement efforts or lower crime, at least not in our state. But it didn't make things worse either.

It doesn't have to be by smoking. There are edibles for example.

Did the dems slip something into the bill that made it a poison pill for repubs?

Just a point to consider any time a vote goes down like this, look and see if there was some language or attached legislation which was a partisan attempt to slip in something that still needed to be debated, or was voted down in previous attempts in other legislation.
