Cannabis tax revenues tend to equal or exceed alcohol tax revenues, over time. It’s been a godsend for local governments that lost sale tax revenues due to Covid restrictions.

Having said this, there will alway be a black market selling inferior product for less.
I am against anything whose selling point is "it generates tax revenue". The government gets too much of our income as it is. Don't give them a new funding stream.

Also, it's just more pleasant to go to a dispensary with the ambience of an Apple store and peruse a lot of options, instead of meeting someone in a dark alley.

At the human (and economic) cost of thousands of people being incarcerated?

And no, I don't partake. But damn -
Parents know to throw away any fruit or homemade treats given to their children on Halloween.

People have been self medicating with alcohol since forever.

Think the alcohol industry is well positioned to get into cannabis production in a big way, once legal barriers are eliminated.

Agree the industrial prison complex likely to be the big loser.
no.. once its legal more people will smoke instead of using alcohol.

Just a point to consider any time a vote goes down like this, look and see if there was some language or attached legislation which was a partisan attempt to slip in something that still needed to be debated, or was voted down in previous attempts in other legislation.
Generally this IS what happens.A straightforward vote on legalization would get bi -partisan votes but democrats add social justice provisions like automatic retroactive expungement of prior convictions/ targeted grants that give minority groups that were harmed by past racist enforcement of drug laws money to start legal Pot businesses/ and setting a percentage of licences aside only for the aforementioned minority groups turn these efforts into partisan affairs.

The democrats don't care if the bills actually pass or not. They put things in that insure they will get little republican support and if they fail they just scream'look we tried but the evil republicans blocked us!' when they could have easily won with a less expansive bill.

While smoking anything is bad for your lungs, cigarettes and pot are worlds apart...cigarette tobacco is full of numerous toxins, pot is generally not.

They cannot really use the 'health/safety' excuse related to smoking though, cigarettes are fully legal for anyone 18 and up, numerous retailers can sell cigarettes and you can buy as much as you like 24/7...if they go after pot using the 'health/safety' tactic...they will be forced to treat cigarettes the same way...

Its pretty clear Govt is NOT concerned with the publics health or safety. LOL

pardon, I recall that After the upheaval against the tobacco industry , they were FORCED to place on all cigarette packaging in LARGE Letters the HEALTH WARNING label. “SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, and May Complicate Pregnancy."

So clearly the Govt is able to use the health /safety factor.

From a toxicology group study: The scientists found that ammonia levels were 20 times higher in the marijuana smoke than in the tobacco smoke, while hydrogen cyanide, nitric oxide and certain aromatic amines occurred at levels 3-5 times higher in the marijuana smoke, they say. The finding is "important information for public health and communication of the risk related to exposure to such materials," say the researchers.

I stated before My position on MJ legalization....

Delta-8 THC has gone viral in eastern south Dakota. It produces a similar high from what I can tell and is being sold because only delta-9 is currently illegal. My particular town isn't and doesn't want to do anything about it despite objections from Kristi Noem and her reefer madness.

Going to buy some more gummy worms today. I'm sure the state legiature will try to close the loophole at some point since they don't really want to respect the will of the voters. Republicans are closet authoritarians also.

Its so much easier to eat 1 or 2 gummy bears than screw up my stomach and give myself reflux and a nasty hangover using alcohol. Here's to freedom, statists.
