And I thought I hit the jackpot when I sold my pair of Nike Bruins with the red stripe from the 1980s, the same model shoe worn by Michael J Fox in 'Back To The Future', for $500 on eBay.
But Marty McFly was a white Christian dude, and there was no human blood.
Yes, it’s got Satan in it. It’s obviously and literally about the side of yourself you don’t let most other people see, though, your devilish side if you will.
Your post is literally about Satan.
Plus, Satan’s not real. So there’s that.
Yeah, I get that. I don't think Satan is real either. I understand that it was absurd, back in the '50s, for people to complain that rock and roll was the devil's music, or that Elvis' dancing or The Rolling Stones' wanting to spend the night was too sexually explicit, and that it was fun to mock the squares and prudes.
But how much farther can pop culture go with this? Last year it was WAP girl power porn, now it's Montero gay devil porn. What will it be next year? At what point does pushing boundaries just to get a rise out of people lose its appeal? When do you stop mocking critics for being prudes, turn to the artist and say, "Dude, that's not art. Have some dignity."
Indeed, actually Old Town Road has an NIN sample in it, so Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have a co writing credit (not a production credit as I erroneously stated upthread). Which gave Trent a CMA. Which is absolutely a hoot. Trent and Bowie were good friends, having toured together in 1999 I think it was, and of course Trent produced all Marilyn Manson’s early stuff.
They’re all super talented people as is Lil Nas, that video is astoundingly good. Very smart marketing with the sneakers.
None of this has anything to do with Satan worship. It’s just art. Perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea. But neither is it supposed to be.
Manson I have a hard time talking about now. I mean I was a fan and he has his allegations against him which I'm not really all that surprised about. I'm pretty sure he did manipulate women he was with. I mean I don't see Rose McGowan wearing that dress at the 1998 VMAs on her own volition. I don't think cheating with Evan Rachel Wood was the only reason Dita Von Tesse asked for a divorce. And Evan Rachel Wood was nearly 20 years younger than Manson when then relationship began. Lots of red flags there.
I just think the devil in music is always an interesting concept that pushes and pulls people in. Faustian deals have always been alleged with celebrities that you either die young or face alot of scandals for your 15 minutes of fame. Obviously this pushes Lil Nas X into not being a one hit wonder which I don't think anyone wouldn't have expected when a novelty trap country rap song debuted two years ago. Now I said 30 minute of fame in a previous post because that was how huge Old Town Road was.

I mean, is this really much worse than South Park with its depiction of Suddam Hussein and Satan in a same-sex relationship? That was 2 decades ago. Ozzy was terrifying parents 40+ years ago with his "satanist antics." As long as these types of things draw a reaction, people will keep doing them.
My response? A shrug before moving on with my life. It's not about "art," it's about the reaction. And people who realize that the gimmick is still working on the "prudes" by drawing outrage will continue mocking and laughing at the reaction. But until the critics realize that it only stops when they stop freaking out each time it happens, it's going to happen again and again.

The devil has had imagery in music. That said typically it is related to metal or faustian deals to learn the blues, which itself was based on the triton, the devil's note. You can hear that chord progression in a forgotten Black Sabbath song, even if it was their first single, "Black Sabbath." There was a Satanic panic in the 1980's with metal and again in the 1990's with alternative industrial groups.
As for WAP, that is no different than Madonna pushing the envelope with Erotica in 1992/3. She would then tone down when she became a mom but she was far from the only one. Prince had a number of "filthy songs." Rock and metal groups too. Hell, a few pop idols had a few "filthy songs." The issue I see is because we live in a culture where nothing is shocking anymore. WAP didn't make people turn the heads the way Darling Nikki did. Mind you, Darling Nikki wasn't even a single.

And the point Lil Nas X himself has been making on twitter: Why does this cgi video trigger more of a reaction than real problems in the world?
Didn’t Madonna do it in y’all’s day? This is nothing new. Except she did/does have talent.
Yes. She also took a style of music from the inner city projects (freestyle) and used her italian heritage to make gazillions. It's a formula as old as America itself. Take music from a culture that's down on the bottom and mainstream it. Madonna had the same "talent" they did. She just was white so the "ghetto" music became mainstream and she became rich.
Mark Wahlberg , Vanilla Ice, Elvis , Beatles. Long list.
Sneaker culture is mainstream. White kids ask their parents to buy these sneakers. In the hood you are not getting 1000 sneakers from your parents. Only the hustlers have such items.
