Vladimir Putin has rewritten the term limits for his position, once again, positioning him to rule until at least 2036, if he so chooses. Like Xi Jinping in China, he is effectively on a path to rule for life. This is where leftism leads - to this.

Russia: Vladimir Putin signs law allowing him to rule till 2036

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed legislation that could theoretically mean he stays in power till 2036, according to a copy of the bill posted on the government's legal information portal.

Under the previous constitution, Putin, 68, who has already been in power for more than two decades, would have been required to have stepped down after his second consecutive term ends in 2024.

But amendments approved by Russians in a nationwide vote last year allow him to run for two more six-year presidential terms. The amendments were passed by the State Duma in late March.

It says right in your article that the amendments were approved by Russians in a nationwide vote. Obviously they are happy with him.

Would that be the people allowing it ?

The competent and benevolent dictator is actually one of the best political situations there can be.

Things get done, good decisions are generally made.

This is Putin, pure and simple.

But. And this is big but, I cannot lie.

When you set up this structure, eventually you get a terrible leader in power and they pretty much destroy your country and do horrible things.

So, when Putin is gone....when Jinping is gone....maybe not the next ruler, maybe not the one after that....but eventually someone will get in there and they will set those countries back decades if not centuries.

The majority of Russians are cool with it. Time to mind ones own business.

It would and the Russian people love Putin, can't deny it.

I'd hope that in view of not too distant Russian history they'd learned a hard lesson about giving someone too much power but hey, that's their problem.

Because their elections are effectively rigged. There is no chance that anything or anyone put up for a vote by Vladimir Putin is going to lose. He controls the media. He controls the process for vetting candidates and amendment such as these. He controls the vote counting apparatus. He controls literally everything in Russia.

What person of capacity could run against Putin in Russia and expect to live through it? He would have a stroke or whatever, or he would disappear. More likely, he would be jailed on some sort of fabricated charges and jailed, rendering him ineligible to contest the election.

If you truly believe they have free and fair elections in that country, you are mistaken. To be fair, we no longer have them here either, at least with regards to presidential elections.

Well lately Putin is the sane head in the foreign policy room, so it might not to be such a bad thing.

Which is exactly what happened to Persia (Iran today). They were so advanced and now are like a bunch of first century tribes.

But it's still a 6 year term so there are some limits in place. And whoever follows him will have to get re-elected.

Well said. I really think Putin and his people have done a great job all things considered. In Russia problems still remain but Russians have never been better off than they are today. Rome wasn't built in a day though and Russia will always face challenges.

As I said, all the Russians I know are cool with this setup. Just let them be.
