Interesting example of gun laws on the books, that are ignored

California mass shooting suspect was barred from buying gun

The man accused of going on a shooting rampage at a Southern California business, killing four people, should not have been allowed to buy or own guns because of a California law that prohibits people from purchasing weapons for 10 years after being convicted of a crime.

And reading is fundamental - from the article you linked:

"While it's unclear how Gaxiola, 44, acquired the weapons used in the March 31 shooting..."

They don't know how he acquired the guns.

True, but given the laws in force:

A) the system failed and allowed him to 'legally' purchase a firearm even though he shouldn't have been able to
B) he circumvented the law

either of which would seem to reinforce the notion that throwing additional laws on the books will likely have little practical effect because:

A) they will be as ill enforced as current laws
B) those with ill intent will ignore the new laws just as they're currently ignoring the current laws

Now it's looking like the punk who killed 8 people at the Fedex facility should have been prevented from buying weapons due to the states Red Flag law but somehow slipped through the cracks when the state never heard his case. I'm not a fan of Red Flag laws, but it seems that if it worked as intended, this mass killing would have been prevented.
That being said, I'm all for enforcing current laws on the books. With so many gun cases being plead, criminals are getting away easy. Time to enact Project Exile on a national scale.

So what makes one think MORE laws would prevent someone like him from getting one?

You make an excellent case for across-the-board national registration and mandatory paperwork for all transfers of firearms, public or private, with complete background checks and mandatory sentences for violators, buyers or sellers.

Sure because 500 million existing firearms, many with no serial number, make that so simple. Probably get 15% compliance so you want to jail a couple hundred million people. Sounds simple enough. How does one enforce a background check, on a firearm with no serial number/and or history, between two people that know each other? Answer, you can't.

So this imaginary database is useless. Especially with States enacting their own laws making any such foolishness illegal.

It's coming. If it doesn't work, we'll try something else.

It already exists. It's called the NCIC system. Just so you know, it's not accessible to ordinary citizens. Only for law enforcement agencies. You can read more here as to the type of info they gather.
