Under normal circumstances, able bodied adults without children typically do have to volunteer or work part-time to be eligible for SNAP benefits unless they are in areas with high unemployment.
They still do. And if they apply everywhere and no one offers them a position then they still are cut off to starve. Around here, before covid, there were many people applying for volunteer spots and more people than positions. Now, a lot of the positions were shut down for the restrictions. So people were getting cut off food stamps for noncompliance because they were forced out of the positions.
I also think any program like that is going to be rife with graft and coruption.
While true, it still might be worthwhile. If for no other reason in order to hear the conservatives go from screaming about how these people don't work to screaming about how they "don't work" when they are working in these programs. Plus we get to hear them whining about the lazy government administrators of said program. It'd be great.
Child care is a major cost and part of the problem.
