They still do. And if they apply everywhere and no one offers them a position then they still are cut off to starve. Around here, before covid, there were many people applying for volunteer spots and more people than positions. Now, a lot of the positions were shut down for the restrictions. So people were getting cut off food stamps for noncompliance because they were forced out of the positions.

We have created generational bums with no education, no skills, no initiative, and no work ethic.

As long as there are federal handouts encouraging people not to work, we will be plagued by a large, permanently dependent segment of the population.

many things are now mechanized as well unless you want to say make little rocks out of big rocks....

the English did have a serious look at making near useless jobs to occupy people during the great depression...it was not adopted for what ever reason

with more and more automation this is an issue whose time has come....4 day work week? as some commie European country do?

Nope, it’s simply working for a living versus having taxpayers support them.

While true, it still might be worthwhile. If for no other reason in order to hear the conservatives go from screaming about how these people don't work to screaming about how they "don't work" when they are working in these programs. Plus we get to hear them whining about the lazy government administrators of said program. It'd be great.
