Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law this week aimed at ending extreme left-wing political indoctrination on college campuses by requiring state colleges and universities to conduct annual assessments of the viewpoint diversity and intellectual freedom at their institutions.

The goal of House Bill 233, which was signed into law on Tuesday, is to “ensure that Florida’s postsecondary students will be shown diverse ideas and opinions, including those that they may disagree with or find uncomfortable.”

Not really. If you are at university and there is a predominate mindset then just adapt to that world view. Be positive and work with others, it is a good life lesson in discipline.

Comply or die! amirite?

But that's not actually the problem, the problem is being punished for your 'viewpoint'. In a majority of colleges in the United States TODAY, if you for example insist and make it known consistently that your 'view' is that there are only men and women and no other genders, you WILL be reprimanded and ultimately thrown out of school

If all he is trying to do is push his personal conservative beliefs in college, that's not diversity, that's propaganda.

If, on the other hand he IS mandating students are showed diverse ideas means just that. He will mandate students are showed the pros of socialism, marxism, conservativism, liberalism, etc?

The only thing he has to do, and it's really simple, is to codify the rights of students and faculty to express views without reprisal.

That's it.

It's not about forcing or requiring one view or the other, it's about not being hauled into the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Gulag office for re-education when you affirmed conservative beliefs or posted online something that was not approved by the committee of comrades

I can't speak specifically about DeSantis's actions, but viewpoint diversity is almost nonexistent, and we need to do something to allow more intellectual freedom.

I was an undergrad back in the late 80s/early 90s. Anything could be discussed back then. I had an excellent liberal arts education where I learned how to be a free thinker. I never felt like I had to self-censor.

Contrast that to grad school back in 2012. People were corrected if they used a 'wrong' term. One time, the term was 'illegal alien' and they were made to say 'undocumented person' except technically, people have often have documents, sometimes faked...there's a whole argument to be made. The point was, a person couldn't complete a sentence without the professor interrupting and making them use specific words. No debate, just force, and the original point they were making was lost.

I recall wanting to debate the terminology, but ended up staying silent because the unspoken assumption was the person who used the 'wrong' term was a racist. I didn't want to be thought of as racist. That trend has only gotten worse. In hindsight, I wish I had spoken up in favor of free speech because I think we are far worse now. It's like an ideological monoculture.

Their rights to different viewpoints are already protected. No one is being arrested for any political belief today.

Remember, DeSantis is also going to have government run polls of students' political affiliation (that are not anonymous). That's a very autocratic thing to do.

I'm uncomfortable with polling as a way to solve this issue. But I also don't like to be constantly polled about my race on forms, which are not anonymous and can end up being used against me.

People aren't getting arrested, but fired, ostracized, bullied, having reputations ruined etc. Posting or saying "All lives matter" has resulted in getting fired or being called a horrible racist. In colleges, such conformity isn't a good thing. How can we make sure a diversity of ideological voices are heard, without fear of retribution? It's a real issue.
