Conservatives will be against this because god created man on earth and so it is obvious the almighty doesn't want us to get off the ground. All people who have ever used an airplane for transportation will go to hell.

Stop a large asteroid? Why? It's just fine orbiting the Sun where it is. It would be impossible to stop in any case. Physics - learn it, live it.
