Paris has reduced speed limits to 30 kph to cut down on CO2 emissions. That is an interesting approach that we could apply here in the US. Should we bring back 55 speed limits on rural highways and freeways we had during the oil shortages. It would save us millions of barrels of oil, wear and tear on vehicles and roads, not to mention billions we spend on gasoline and diesel - and reduce CO2 emissions. Back in the day, I had a Datsun B210 that struggled on overpasses but it got better than 40 mpg at 55. Most people drove 65 or so, but that is better than 85 we have now.
No. We need higher speed options like high speed rail. We don't need government holding people down with lower speed limits and longer commutes. People would be better off spending their time at work earning money, and at home relaxing... No one benefits going to and fro.
Where I live, some highways are 75 mph, the way I see it, people typically do 10-15 over the speed limit.
They would continue to drive over at 55 by the same amount , but it is relative and the fuel savings would be just as large (larger actually because of physics).
I had to drive my car with the donut tire about 200 miles and was amazed how much the mileage went up when I slowed it down. You can't drive 55 in my state without risking your life though.
But we should also consider 55 as a fairly painless way of achieving lower emission goals. Every gallon of gas burned results in 20 lbs of CO2.
I'm more concerned that Dems will substitute Environmental Crisis for Covid (when that has been milked for all it's worth) and institute nationwide mandatory stay-at-home shutdowns for timed intervals to meet "climate change goals".
Once you have control, you gotta have the next crisis queued up to whip the populace into an obsequious frightened frenzy.
You neat me to it. If we want everyone to drive 55, we have to make the posted limit 35.
People will always stretch to 10 mph over. But at 55 that is 65 and the gas savings and emissions reduction depends on a reduction in consumption which would be achieved just by reducing speeds. 55 would result in a 10-15 mph avg speed drop depending on where one lives. That would mean huge fuel savings and emissions reductions.
Maybe many don't remember or weren't driving back in the 80s, but the traffic moved about 10 over just like it does now, 55 meant 65. The vast majority of people are not going to go 85 if the posted speed is 55.
a more effective solution would be to re-time the traffic lights, so people do not get consecutive red lights, in many areas, it appears like this is done on purpose and actually creates traffic.
