You don't get how this works. Snopes etc don't do any "fact checking" of their own.
There are a few shadowy orgs (Palantir etc) who spoon feeds them the "checked facts" for them to publish.
They then in unison post these "checked facts" from one org, to clog search engines. So when searching for something they don't like, you see "false, mostly false, false pants on fire". Add to that, google is now cooperating and deliberately manipulating their search engine algorithms to suppress sources they don't want you to see.
Fact checkers are businesses that are selling advertising by checking the statements, memes, written, and spoken words and stories that are constantly circulating on the web, our media, and social spots.
They are paid by having people show up to their websites. They can mostly be non-partisan companies, but with any "journalistic" company, you tend to have a lot of young idealists.
That is only true when they are supporting your agenda, which is most of the time.
I guess this will be the norm for news stories that put liberals in a questionable light.

It will be about what the fact checkers say... not what actually happened.
I think in the past, it was informally the mainstream media... NYT, WaPo, ABC, NBC, etc... that were the defacto standards of truth... until we found out they weren't. Now they have created another layer.

FYI - This is the account of the story that the fact checkers are debunking.
A click bait conservative blog that claims to be based in Canada claimed the wife of Pfizer’s CEO had died of Covid and attributed its source to an unnamed doctor. Other media that skims off click bait news ran with it and it was shared all over social media as if fact.
Just more evidence people believe anything when it seems to validate their perceptions.
And what is wrong with that? People should have developed enough critical thinking skills by the time they finished grade school to be able to spot utter nonsense that has no redeeming value in truth and isn't even a gray area.
That applies in some cases, but there's a huge difference in finding out new and unexpected information through scientific discovery versus promoting something that one knows to be false.
You are looking at scientific history under the lens of further discovery. Again at the time the people in the "know", said it was false to say that the earth revolved around the sun or that the earth was round. The "fact-checkers" and people defending the checkers would be right there saying exactly what you said that anyone who said otherwise was "promoting something that one knows to be false". Now, eventually, they actually followed science and we now know that the earth is indeed round and revolves around the sun. But by today's standards, there would still be a group of people afraid to fall off the edge of the earth, and the "fact-checkers" and other entities would be doing everything they could do to suppress the information of anyone who said the earth was round.
If someone says that a person died, have that person state that they aren't dead. Case closed...you don't need an army of "fact-checkers" to come out and say it is false and then try and suppress the information.
