The car is the property of the owner. Why should there be a penalty when no ones rights have been violated?

That's O.K.

Just because you don't know if they exist does not mean they don't exist.
They will be in every new car and on all the time to monitor everyone 24/7/365.
Where that data goes.....speculate all you want.

That same device that monitors your driving can also track your mileage for the Federal Mileage "Fee" they want to implement.

The infrastructure bill has money allocated for a pilot program for that "fee".

I don't drive much compared to people who are always on the go, so the mileage fee really won't affect me much in the long run. They have to implement new ways to fund the road maintenance programs besides gas taxes as more people transition over to electric vehicles. NC already collects an added fee for electric vehicle registration but it's probably not enough to offset the actual costs of road maintenance and new construction.

Especially when it's the government that seeks to infringe on your property rights without due process?

What happened to the Highway Trust Fund, and where did they **** away $3.7 trillion in federal taxes and another $1-2 trillion in local/state taxes we paid?

NC collects their own state fees which have nothing to do with the Federal government who owns the interstate highway system.

Just like everyone gets a piece of the gas tax, everyone will want a piece of the mileage tax.

All the money disappears into a black hole once it gets to DC.
And then they cry there is no more money left.

Yeah..just where did it all go ?

It would be trivial to put in another piece of software to, say, disable the gas pedal, and let the car coast slowly to a stop. (I hope it doesn't do that on a busy freeway.)

"I don't think" is not a reason to not deal with this intrusion NOW, before it winds up in our cars whether we like it or not. The tech is definitely there.
And there lies the problem.

Hell, this will probably kill more people than drunk drivers.
