The bottom quintile income group earns $25,600 or less.

Why is this even happening? It just keeps them broke and makes the rich even richer.

Luxuries like eating at McDonalds are actually better for low income families than necessities like smoking and lottery tickets.

ah the working poor as the media lovingly call them. they always have money for tattoos, multiple dogs, steady diet of fast food, iphones, gaming consoles, drugs/alcohol and perpetual trips to retail stores like walmart and target.

their living quarters are typically disorganized, messy -unsanitary. too busy “working” to clean or raise their kids. basically live for the moment. impulsively does what feels good without looking at the big picture. would spend their last $20 for the week on a want vs. a necessity.

Such as $20 on Big Macs rather than packs of cigarettes?

It's the small treats in life that make life worth living. Don't blame them one bit!

Yeah, the poor deserve no luxuries, they should all just use cheap tp, go food shopping at the dollar store and just stay away from fresh fruit and products right ? Just stay away from the nice places because some random guy thinks if youre poor you should have nothing of enjoyment being poor is obviously a punishment while the wealthy in america keep punching down to make themselves feel better

Nope. Eating at McDonald's isn't healthy. The obesity rate is highest among the low-income, obesity-related diseases are debilitating, thereby exacerbating their inability to earn at least a middle class income.

For example, the demographic group with the highest obesity rate is Food Stamp recipients (source: USDA). Only the low-income qualify for Food Stamps.

The poor are choosing to waste 40% of their income on unnecessary luxuries. The results of that:

1) They further enrich the rich, at their own expense. Note that they are VOLUNTARILY doing this.

2) They remain poor due to their extremely bad money management decisions.

I just had to see what they considered luxuries. I do not agree with their definition. If a poor person bought more fresh fruit when their income went up, the study would call the fruit a luxury. Who comes up with these bogus ideas?

From the OP's link:

Quote:
It’s worth noting that by the specialized nomenclature of the dismal science, even eating at McDonald’s is a luxury — that is, we do it more as our incomes rise — while smoking and lottery-ticket buying are categorized as necessities. For its part, the Deutsche Bank report explicitly defined luxuries as goods or services consumed in greater proportions as a person’s income increases and necessities as those goods or services that make up a smaller proportion of spending as a person’s income increases.
Oh yes, the article is from July 21, 2017
