As someone on the left or right, have you ever changed your mind politically about a topic? And if so, what was the topic and why did you change your mind?
I’m a Republican who switched from being a democrat around 2009.
I used to be staunchly anti-gun and passed judgment on gun owners. Being in the presence of a private citizen with a firearm still makes me extremely uncomfortable, but I have grown to understand and accept why many people own firearms. This change in opinion was largely driven by seeing our country become increasingly unsafe.
Well - back when I was a naive highschool student, I remember thinking that California's "Handgun Freeze" idea would work. I think sometime within a year or two of that, I became much wiser.
Wow. That must have been enlightening and life changing, BobNJ1960. But I'm certain many people going into something with their mind already made up are familiar with not being shocked or changed.
Maybe I should clarify. There's plenty of drama queens on other threads. My question is, if you are left or right, did you change your mind toward the other side on an issue. What was the issue and why did you change your mind?
I used to be pro-life but now I am pro-abortion. In a welfare state it makes economic sense to give women the option to kill their unborn so they do not become a burden on the system.
Raised as a conservative military brat, a whole lot of things.
A particular example would be gay marriage. Doesn't really make sense for the supposed liberty-minded side of small non-intrusive government to have opposed that to begin with. Much less continue to do so in the current platform.
What changed my mind? Probably just beginning to encounter and become friends with LGBT folks in the workplace and forming my own opinions rather than my parent's views.

Pro-Abortion here too I'm still a Democrat in heart after all
