Are the ChiComs paying big bucks, threatening relatives in China or both?

We are not talking about losers going to play for another country. These are top level athletes. Hu even gave up her US citizenship (I don't know about the others)

My feelings are both, money and threats.

Is the idea that people with dual citizenship could prefer a country other than the US that far-fetched?

He may be referring to Eileen Gu, one of the best female freestyle skiers in the world.

It's mostly for the money because she's going to absolutely blow up in China if she wins a gold medal for China. She already has 1.2M Weibo followers, is getting all sorts of sponsorship deals, and has gotten modeling gigs without any Olympic gold to date. She also seems bright as she got a 1580 on her SATs (while maintaining her career as a skier) and got accepted to Stanford.

Gu is only 18 and her mother, who's a self-made wealthy woman, looks like the one who engineered her skiing for China (recognizing the potential $$$). Gu seems interested in social issues as she supported Black Lives Matter, but she's silent on Hong Kong and the Uyghurs due to the athletic/political repercussions. She also doesn't seem all that nationalist about China. I'm willing to give her an Olympics or two before I judge her. She'd actually have a pretty strong hand to speak her mind about China's human rights record if she had a few gold medals in the bag and was a national hero (it also helps that she lives in the US).

China gives financial support to its athletes, housing, training, way beyond anything they can get in the US. The US does provide opportunities for great wealth in endorsements to those who are successful. Eileen Gu will become a two-nation star, benefitting from all that China has given her and all that US advertisers will offer.

Not many people in the US are going to care about her if she isn't bringing home gold for us. That may impact her marketability in the US. She (and her mother) definitely got it right from a financial perspective though. She'll be national hero in China if she wins Olympic gold for them, while she'd be more likely to get lost in the crowd if she skied for the US.

My feelings are America is on the decline. The culture is toxic all over, and has been heading that way since the mid 90s. Our Govt is inept on purpose, which means someone some group is trying to ruin us probably for their own gain. Sports is becoming politicized with all the Trans competing and ruining the experience for everyone else, and its being allowed by the powers that be.

Our freedoms are being eroded like with anti 2A, anti-BDS legislation, etc etc

Who can blame these athletes for seeing the writing on the wall?

Good for them. If I could pack up and leave, Id too.

True, she can't just be grabbed off the streets and disappear for 3 months like some do when they cross a line verbally.

Then they resurface to say they were just hanging out at home, apologize for their wrongdoing or state that it was all a misunderstanding!

Waiting for this thread to attract (due to key words) key Chinese apologists that claim that China doesn't even deal in propaganda! (per other threads) and that their own media always speaks the truth although does omit sensitive topics....bwah hah hah.
