When referring to transsexual? I've been known to use this word out of convenience instead of spelling out the whole word. But I'm pretty sure this is offensive to some people. I'm not sure I would refrain from using the word, except maybe in a professional setting if for some reason transsexuals were being discussed.

In todays culture of trying to shorten everything (i.e. fro yo = frozen yogurt) or (R U K = are you ok), it is amusing to see the only exceptions are by those conditioned by political correctness. For example they will type out African-American instead of typing black.
There are many other examples of this, but the point being that when a word is claimed to be offensive by liberals/leftists, it is typically on behalf of others, not themselves.
So shortening transsexual to tranny is not only normal, but the most well known transsexual (RuPaul), calls himself a tranny, and does not have any issue with the term.
The same can be said for shortening heterosexual to hetero, and homosexual to homo. Also Jewish to Jew and Middle-Eastern to Arab.
But on occasion you will have the PC police try to impose their kooky standards on the rest of us. The best thing to do is just ignore them, and their indignant projection.
Here's the thing with virtual signalers and victim-mentality morons: What they really want, deep down inside, is drama. It doesn't matter if it's real or imagined, they just love to complain and bleat "woe is me" to anyone who will listen. Being offended by the use of the word "tranny" to refer to transgender folks is just that: baseless whining with no other purpose than to get attention and/or sympathy.

No, nobody "knows this". What we know is that being offended by the simple shortening of a long word or phrase is probably indicative of mental issues. Is LOL offensive? Saying "peeps" instead of "people"? "Homies" instead of "home boys"? Or any one of hundreds of shortened versions of words/phrases used by people of every skin color, sex, sexual orientation, etc., every single day? Explain. We'll wait. Should be interesting. I predict you won't be back.
The bottom line, for rational people anyway, is that "tranny" is just a short version of "transgender". If you're offended by "tranny", you're offended by "transgender", which makes you intolerant of other people's lifestyle choices.
I may be old school but have no idea why it is necessary to tell someone you are transsexual, bisexual, homosexual, man, woman, it, who, what, she, he, etc.
