US troops are there in a NATO country to bolster security. The same doctrine has been used through the cold war. If Russia attack and kill American troops, the US will be forced to retaliate. Russia will have to decide if an invasion is worth the trouble.
The Kremlin intensified its information operation to accuse Ukraine of preparing to conduct a false-flag attack using a dirty bomb for a second day in a row on October 24. Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov separately called his counterparts from the United Kingdom and United States about the “situation connected with Ukraine’s possible use of a dirty bomb” (a conventional explosive laced with radioactive material that is not a nuclear weapon) on October 24. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made similar calls with his counterparts from the United Stated, United Kingdom, France, and Turkey on October 23. The Chief of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Forces, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, gave a lengthy briefing accusing Ukraine of planning a dirty bomb false-flag provocation to accuse Russia of detonating a low-yield nuclear weapon in Ukraine on October 24. Russian military bloggers are amplifying this information operation. ISW assesses the Kremlin is unlikely to be preparing an imminent false-flag dirty bomb attack.

There was never a chance of Russia invading Romania. US troops are probably to make Russia think NATO could attack, which will cause them to divert/redeploy their troops, which would then thin out the Russian lines. Ukraine has two more weeks before the midterms. They need to take Kherson, whatever the cost in Ukrainian lives.

Just like Russia sending Belorussian army to Ukraine's border. Nothing happening, but its keeping them guessing.
That’s correct. Belarus (nor Iran or Syria) are going to invade or send combat troops. Dictators might love Putin, but they don’t love him that much. Fastest way to a protest is to mobilize a populace who doesn’t want to go to war.

I disagree somewhat. The west attempted a coup in Belarus last year to overthrow Lukashenko(similar to the 2014 coup that overthrew Yanukovych). It failed because Lukashenko kicked the CIA/National Endowment for Democracy, and George Soros' NGO's out of the country. If Putin loses this war, it will be regime-change in Moscow and Minsk.
America is pushing hard for a coup in Iran as we speak, but it will also fail. America has been trying to topple the Assad government ever since we invaded Iraq in 2003. We became so desperate to overthrow Assad we even supported ISIS.
Basically, Belarus, Syria, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, China, Saudi Arabia, and pretty much the entire Islamic world can't afford for Russia to lose. The entire "Global South" is rooting against America.
As for all this talk about dictators and authoritarian governments. The reality is, there are elites in every country, and they are the ones making the important decisions. In democracies, the elites are the capitalists or are appointed by the capitalists. Democracy is inseparable from capitalism. The capitalists own the media, the banks, the corporations, the economy, the means of production, etc. With these they exert enormous influence over the country. This same dynamic applies both within a country and across countries, since it is often the same capitalists/bankers who own not only America, but also Britain, Germany, France, etc.
Thus by making other countries democratic, our capitalists can control them. At least, as long we are the richest country with the wealthiest capitalists. If say, China has wealthier capitalists, then China can use its wealth to influence US elections and control our government.
In short, democracy allows foreign meddling. What we called "dictators" or "authoritarian governments" are governments that keep out American influence. Which is also why the United States will become increasingly authoritarian over time. As China gets richer, we will have to block out Chinese influence(TikTok, 5g, etc).
Which is also why when democrats say we are fighting for our democracy, they're not lying. Democracy cannot survive as #2. The only reason democracy survived here is because we were safe in the Western hemisphere, allowing us to keep out foreign influence, while we exploited European rivalries to our advantage.
If China succeeds in becoming the dominant world power, democracy will disappear from the face of the Earth, probably forever. The question is, is that a bad thing?

Asks the person who has never lived under the boot of a brutal dictator. Human beings will always and forever seek freedom. And as we are seeing in Ukraine, they will fight to the death to ensure it. As we saw in the American Revolution. As we saw in the free world's fight against fascism in WWII.
The vast majority of human beings would agree that living in a totalitarian state is a "bad thing".

Is that serious? You are aware what the Chinese have been doing in the Xinjian province? How they crushed Hong Kong? Just to name two things. You thing that's "better" over flawed Western Democracy?
Battles now in most critical phase. Partial translation from Greek to English follows:
S.Surovikin took the "scalp" of Zelensky: Huge Ukrainian defeat in Kherson - Russian VDV & Marines crushed waves of Ukrainian counterattacks
Hand-to-hand combat video released for the first time
Shocking videos have been released showing the extent of the crushing defeat suffered by the Ukrainian forces in the latest counter-attacks in Kherson, which is credited to the new Commander of the Russian forces, General S.Surovikin.
There is already satisfaction in the Kremlin that several fronts have stabilized. There is better organization between forces and services. Regardless of what happens in the coming days, the Ukrainian Army has lost massive amounts of war material and soldiers.
In the recent counter-attacks, the Ukrainians have hundreds of dead and wounded.
In the rare audio-visual footage, you can see for the first time hand-to-hand combat between the Russian Airborne Forces and the Ukrainians. Russian Paratroopers have been literally holding up the Russian Army for months waiting for reinforcements to be sent.
This is followed by the ambush set by the Russians on the Ukrainian forces resulting in the disappearance of an entire phalanx. At the end of the text you can see what happened when Ukrainians and Russians came "face to face".
For the first time since the beginning of the war, such a material fact is published that shows that the battles in Kherson have entered their most critical phase.
