I totally agree. Decks and porches on residential housing have more regulations to prevent falling than subway plaforms.

My comment was meant to be sarcastic. We all hear the demands for gun reform but little about stopping these senseless crimes on the subway platforms. Does it matter if someone is shot or pushed in front of a train? dead is dead.


Some kind of gate would stop these crimes but so would detaining the deranged that do the pushing.

The irony is that a solution to the problem of subway pushings already exists and has been proven effective in many applications worldwide. As I said earlier, it wouldn't be easy or cheap to install platform screens in New York. But the solution does exist. (It would also have a host of other benefits, including noise reduction, climate control, and reduction of track fires resulting from discarded waste.)

Unfortunately, a solution to the shootings is much more elusive. You and I know that knee-jerk gun control is not the answer. But what is?
