Having $1.3M is not that much - having a $400K pension for life is. He also has an estimated net worth of $70 M currently - should be able to afford almost anything.

Maybe you should learn what energy independence means - according to the DOE Energy Information Administration - it is about exporting more energy than we import. So we were net exporters of oil in 2020 (and apparently 2021 also). Since we are net exporters of coal and natural gas, if we are net exporters of petroleum and petroleum products, then we are energy independent. In fact, because of the net exports of coal and natural gas, even if we are slight net importers of oil, we would still be energy independent, that was the case in 2019.

The US exports some crude that is a better fit for foreign refineries and imports some crude that is a better fit for US refineries. The US also has a large capacity to refine crude - so we import oil, refine it, and then export it as gasoline and diesel as well as importing refined product from other countries sometimes to reduce transport costs.

Most natural gas appliances can use either propane or natural gas as a fuel source.

Why do you have a problem with an exPresident making money after leaving office? Do you think they should live in poverty? Or go get a job selling retail? Just what kind of job would you approve of for an exPresident to earn a living?

Obama seems to be doing just fine during the recession.

So are all rich. So why pick on Obama other than political hate. If you don't hate the conservative rich, then where is the hypocrisy?

Agreed. It's tough to make an honest living when one is bought and paid for.

How much is he worth now? Did the office of President make him rich like Vladimir Putin? Putin is another guy who uses political powers to make himself rich.

So what is your suggestion for an "appropriate" way for an exPresident to earn a living?

I was exploring the use of propane many years ago to heat our family's Oregons coastal beach home rather than electricity (6-8¢ kwh, coop electricity from Bonneville Power). Just didn't pencil out. And the frequency of power outages in the coastal area, just doesn't happen very often. We get frequent power glitches here in East side Seattle more than the undeveloped coastal Oregon. Don't know why- Oregon's Coast is above ground transmission vs Seattle's underground grid works.

Opted to use high efficiency wood pellets. Sister now has ownership and she opted to install high efficiency wood. There's a lot of wood here.
For Cape Cod, with possible storms of all types, propane thermal and propane powered generator is a logical choice in the event of a electrical grid failure. isn't cape cod an island?
YMMV
Cape Cod is not an island. But Martha's Vineyard, where Obama lives, is. I doubt there are any natural gas pipelines out to the island, so liquid propane is the logical choice to heat one's home there.
