What the HECK! is this some type of game to the victim and his attackers? The guy that got beat up was glad it was his turn? that he could take some punches?
I took it as an honorable, self-sacrificing sentiment. "Because I got attacked, that means that someone else didn't."
Yet they continue to blame Trump for using “China Virus” to describe COVID, as if these “teens” were actually Trump supporters. Wonder why this attack didn’t go viral in the mainstream news?
A year ago not far from me a Filipino grandpa went to KFC and by the parking lot a black thug beat the living daylights out of him sad enough he died from blunt head trauma.
As per usual no mention of them being black in the write up. If it wasn’t for the rate of black violence in the U.S. the overall U.S. homicide rate would be less than half what it is now. USDOJ, FBISTATS.
Why do you assume they are black? Maybe they're stressed-out white or Oriental students celebrating the end of a school year in a mostly peaceful manner?

Not really clear that it is or isn't. Seems to be a bit of a trend amongst the hoodrats. It's not new, variations of the knockout game date back to at least the 1980s even if it went by different names. Fads come and go, saw a resurgence in 2009, eventually settled off a bit, and now it appears to have become once again more popular in the last few years.
It's more Fahrenheit 451 or Clockwork Orange than what I'd really call a hate crime... not so much hate, just a glorifying of random acts of violence. Which again, isn't really something new. Those books were written in the '50s and '60s. Possibly one of the perps went on social media like a dum-dum and posted up their anti-Asian manifesto but just as likely it was just semi-random and really more about socioeconomics than race.
Also there's a big aspect of moral panic to it. It's not nearly as prevalent as the pearl clutchers would have you believe
For random attacks, there sure seems to be a shortage of videos showing black perps randomly sucker punching another black man or woman. I mean, "random" right? Then there should be plenty of videos where a black victim receives a sucker punch, not just white or asian victims.
Black on Asian crime is another reason Asians are turning to the Republican Party.
