Special counsel Jack Smith's team has asked the Supreme Court to step in and decide the issue of presidential immunity regarding former President Donald Trump's federal election interference charges.
Smith is asking the court to immediately resolve the issue, to prevent any delay of the March 4 trial date.
"Respondent’s appeal of the ruling rejecting his immunity and related claims, however, suspends the trial of the charges against him, scheduled to begin on March 4, 2024," the special counsel wrote in a filing Monday. "It is of imperative public importance that respondent’s claims of immunity be resolved by this Court and that respondent’s trial proceed as promptly as possible if his claim of immunity is rejected."
His professional career has been built on nothing but very smart moves.
Great opportunity to hold the Supremes' feet to the fire. We'll see if they are capable of stepping up.
The Supreme Court should get this over with sooner rather than later. The longer this issue lingers, the longer we all have to listen to the orange-haired sociopath. Let the court decide, which is what our justice system is supposed to be about.
Interesting. It's hard to think of many petitions of more importance before the Supreme Court right now.
SCOTUS will expedite it and kick it back to the Appeals Court level. They really, really don’t want to get involved deeply in anything this controversial until their ethics scandals have had a while to fade.
We won’t even know if SCOTUS will take the case til possibly Jan 8.
You guys can cool your heels for a bit.
It’s funny though, they dragged this out for years and suddenly there’s a rush. Whatever.
That’s less than a month. Speedy by SCOTUS standards. Some cases drag on for years.
With a criminal trial pending and the Court’s desire to stay out of it, it will probably receive a lot of priority.
