Good article worth the read./August 2008 Atlantic Monthly Why is crime rising in so many American cities? The answer implicates one of the most celebrated antipoverty programs of recent decades.by Hanna Rosin American Murder MysteryArticle Toolssponsored by: E-mail Article Printer Format Photographs by Robert King/Polaris ImagesVideo footage shot by Hanna Rosin THE THIN BLUE LINE: Doug Barnes of the Memphis Police Department inside the Old Allen Station armory To get to the Old Allen police station in North Memphis, you have to drive all the way to the end of a quiet suburban road until it turns country. Hidden by six acres of woods, the station seems to be the kind of place that might concern itself mainly with lost dogs, or maybe the misuse of hunting licenses. But it isn’t. Not anymore. As Lieutenant Doug Barnes waited for me to arrive one night for a tour of his beat, he had a smoke and listened for shots. He counted eight, none meant for buck. “Nothing unusual for a Tuesday,” he told me. American Murder Mystery
Odd that no one has responded to this article. If I understand it correctly, the section 8 program moved some individuals that didn't necessarily want to be moved from the projects and spread them around. It's not surprising that crime raises as a result.

Kind of tough to respond here. First off the story is very long and personal, in keeping with the style of that magazine. Secondly, it lacks statistical analysis to show trends before and after linking Section 8 with problems, it is practically all anecdotal.
I'm always willing to get involved in these types of discussions, but I need to see something a bit more statistical and specific before I would be willing to provide pro or con comments.
I agree that the evidence is merely anecdotal. This would probably be a great place to begin a study though. Especially with the fact that rising crime is not a Memphis only event. I believe that the article also said St. Louis and Charlotte are plagued by the same issues.

Sure, but you need to do a comprehensive multivariate analysis to determine what is the root cause of problems. Frequently, when you dive into the stats stuff the "obvious" answer isn't so clear anymore.
Fair enough. With what you know at the moment, do you consider section 8 housing a valuable program? To me, the idea of taking those in poverty and helping them to live in an area more conducive to success, is great.
Success is not an area or a condition, it is the result of a work ethic. Success can not be given and it can not be purchased. It has to be earned and the first step to earning it is to recognize that the only obstacle to its achievement is ones self.

I didn't read the story, my eyes are tired but moving someone from a bad area to a better area doesn't help anyone unless they want to help themselves and i do believe it spreads crime.
Nomander said it best.

Hey man, good post but one question that for some reason I think you may be able to answer for me, it's been bothering me for weeks... what is it called in the dictionary when a platypus sports an attitude? It certainly wouldn't be sporting an "attipus," as that would likely remove the viciously stinging subtly concealed critical edge of the stealth word attack that you are currently reading. I don't know. But I do know that God has to have been high when he dreamed up those little egg-laying bastards. High above the earth looking down upon the life forms of our world from his gigantic emerald throne in the sky, that is.
