"Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday rejected $555 million in federal stimulus money that would expand state unemployment benefits, saying the money would have required the state to keep funding the expanded benefits after the stimulus money ran out.

Perry, an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama's $787 billion stimulus bill, did accept most of the roughly $17 billion slated for Texas in the plan."

From the link. That seems to be the case in a lot of "red" states that don't have much of a safety net.

What I wish they would do is allow the Red States to set their own Federal Income Tax rate provided the the Federal Govenment reduces spending by that same percentage in their State...

They are almost all on the Federal Goverments's teat.....In other words, we spend more on Red States than we take in via Federal Income tax rates.

Expose them for the welfare queens that they are....LOL

Uh, you don't seem to understand. He's saying that Texas will fund it OURSELVES and NOT put a bigger burden on businesses and our state government by having to adopt the fed. government mandates to receive fed money.

Typical anti-working class Republican move. Reject ONLY the money intended to help the unemployed.

Perhaps you should read further :

Perry's decision comes despite warnings from Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Tom Pauken that the state's unemployment compensation trust fund could be operating at a deficit by October. Pauken told lawmakers recently that insolvency might not be not far behind

The Governor is being arned ahead of time, the consequences of his decession.
Oh well, he'll never have to ever accept unemployment anyway.

I read the article. More importantly, I saw my guv interviewed at length on TV about this. It would be MORE costly for our state to have to adopt the fed. rules. THAT is the point. We will work ON OUR OWN to replenish the fund if it becomes threatened.
