Speaking publicly for one of the first times since the end of the presidential campaign, John McCain's campaign manager Steve Schmidt painted a dire portrait of the state of the Republican Party, arguing that the GOP has largely been co-opted by its religious elements.
"If you put public policy issues to a religious test, you risk becoming a religious party," Schmidt declared. "And in a free country, a political party cannot be viable in the long term if it is seen as a sectarian party."
Glad to hear that someone in the R party is recognizing that fact. For a party that claims to be for smaller government and more individual control of their lives, the hard-core Christian right isn't the base you want. You can support and respect religion and those with religious beliefs without it becoming the primary plank of the party platform.
The Republican's support for restricting/outlawing abortion makes as little sense as many Dems support for restrictions on firearms owner's rights. Both are personal choices, the gov can stay the he!! out of it.
True but not using religion will take some time - a lot of their base loves religious/social wars.
Short-term, they will become more shrill as they are the new minority, but maybe, after a couple of more lost elections, they might come to their senses.
religion is going to do to the repubs what the environmentalists did to the democrat party. now they are both jokes.
Exactly! The religious fundies just want to ban abortion and gay marriage nationally. Both those issues do not affect me in any way. However, the environmental fundies won't be satisfied until every American is living like cavemen in prehistoric times to "save the planet". I would rather have religious fundies in control then crazy environmentalists.

You are just being very short-sighted. The anti-abortion, anti-gay-marriage movements are not going to destroy our planet materially, but the way we live our lives without changing certainly will contribute to a decline of this planet's health. Your having nothing to do with abortion or gay marriage does not excuse you from being responsible for the well-being of the community. That's not about political parties. It's about your respect for the planet we all share, and the rest of the community.
