The fact that Specter fled the GOP at the very time Democrats needed 60 senators has to be an incredible slap to the Republicans. This is yet another nail in the coffin. Soon the GOP will be totally buried "hey, things happen"
...and making the slap even more resounding, he did it at the 100-day mark. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Right! Specter has his personal reasons to stick it to the Republican party but the timing is hugely dramatic. Big legislation on health care\ environment\ labor is upcoming. Senator Specter is a friend of Biden & trusts the Democratic party.
- The moderate Republican senator from Maine blamed the GOP emphasis on conservative social values over the party's core fiscal principles as the reason for Republican voter losses. "Ideological purity is not the ticket back to the promised land of governing majorities - indeed, it was when we began to emphasize social issues to the detriment of some of our basic tenets as a party that we encountered an electoral backlash," she writes. (Translation: The evango-fascist wingnuts have to shut up and sit down, the GOP is NOT their private little party. We cannot legislate morality by outlawing abortion or by denying people sex-ed and birth control.)
- "We should view an expansion of diversity within the party as a triumph that will broaden our appeal." (Translation: We need to let gay people openly be members of the GOP, live and let live like the old days.)
- "We cannot prevail as a party without conservatives. But it is equally certain we cannot prevail in the future without moderates," Snowe warns. (Translation: The great strength of America is in the center, we need to get back there and work with the "silent majority.")

Excellent analysis! This is why most people I know here in PA have a hard time taking the Republican party seriously these days.

These are excellent points, especially the one about gays. For their sake, I hope the GOP listens.

Thanks guys for the kind words. Of course, the GOP is now about to put their Governor of Utah on the enemy's list for daring to say that gays should have civil unions, which is in another thread to be found here. They never learn.

Specter announcing he is a Democrat was as surprising as Clay Aiken announcing he was gay....
And this is somehow bad.....?

I don't think he meant it was a bad thing, only that the writing has been on the wall for all to see.
