You and me both, especially given how big the blacked-out area was.
I don't know what was done in the past, but I am extremely glad that something is being done now. So ironic to me, that those who would suggest that President Obama has compromised our national security, complain when he does something to bolster it.
BTW:
""Other than a nuclear device or some other type of destructive weapon, the threat to our infrastructure, the threat to our intelligence, the threat to our computer network is the most critical threat we face," he added."

I have never suggested President Obama has compromised our National Security. Never.
In fact he is carrying on the same National Security scare tactics the last administration gave us.
as a side note: why do people on this forum make up things they thought they read from a poster? It is quite annoying.

What you consider 'scare tactics' I consider informational discourse. A potential new presidential appointment is a newsworthy event. I would much rather a press conference than a simple press release, especially on an issue of this importance.

why because the cyberbogeyman is going to jump through your computer?
This is a play right from the Bush playbook.
Bad news everywhere so lets tell Americans about threats: in this case "cyberthreats".
Lets raise the Cyber threat level --- how about to Code RED?

Earlier you wrote:
"I think it is hilarious cyber security is an issue the President needs a press conference for today.
North Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Job losses, GM Bankruptcy, Millions of forelclosures... Oh and DO not forget - make sure we have those firewalls turned on."
So, really you just want to choose the topic of the press conference.
Okay, I get it now.
" From now on, our digital infrastructure, the networks and computers we depend on every day will be treated as they should be; as a strategic national asset. Protecting this infrastructure will be a national security priority. We will ensure that these networks are secure, trustworthy, and resilient. We will deter, prevent, detect, and defend against attacks and recover quickly from any disruptions or damage. "
there it is folks. Our computers are a national asset. Go Ahead worshippers spin this one.
"Third, we will strengthen the public-private partnerships that are critical to this endeavor. The vast majority of our critical infrastructure in the United States is owned and operated by the private sector. So let me be very clear. My administration will not dictate security standards for private companies. On the contrary, we will collaborate with industry to find technology solutions that ensure our security and promote prosperity. "
are they National Assets? They are treated like National Assests but they are really not. Ok I get it.
