The more I learn about others, the more I realize they don't take the time to put 2 and 2 together unless it is about something that they can see in front of them or is put in front of them. Some of the most challenging subjects have gone by without discussion or examination here (and probably everywhere).
Just a thought!
I thought I was the only one who can see we are turning into a nation of zombies. Most of us are too busy working like lab rats trying to survive that we don't have time to look around and see what's happening to us. I'll be honest, I'm so worn out and stressed by the end of the day that I don't want to think if I don't have to. It's scary and I hate feeling that way. Here in America, we are bombarded with ads and images telling us to work, work, work so we can buy, buy, buy things we probably don't really need. But I think that's the way the government has designed the country to run, deliberately. The idea is to keep us fat with fast food, lazy with driving cars when we should walk more, and brainwashed through the television. I know that sounds paranoid, but that's what seems to be happening. I don't think it's apathy that's the problem. We're just a nation of sleep-deprived, unhealthy and under-educated people. But as Jon Stewart says, "That's just my opinion, I could be wrong."
I just remembered I wanted to see if you knew of a time-line on the introduction of pharmaceutical products on the telly. I don't watch TV generally, and in fact, went without it for about 6-odd years. Just passing thru this town and in order to get good internet I had to go with comcast, hence I have television access.
So, I notice a seriously high increase in promoting over the counter, and prescription drugs. Actually, I find it all appalling as it seems to promote, yes that word promote, the use of drugs for gain. While they quote all the seemingly endless side effects, it troubles me that people will feel seduced into taking unnecessary drugs.
Have you followed the changes? Did pharmaceutical (and legal agents, too) get some official permission to advertise two services that were at one time prohibited?
Hmm, I don't know. I suppose it's something I could research, but I have some work to finish before I can head home for the weekend!
As for non-prescription stuff, like Advil, it's been on the television as long as I can remember (I'm 31). I only remember prescription stuff showing up on televion in the last 5 years or so. Maybe it started with Viagra? I don't know. It's certainly something work learning.
In the early 90's there was a change. It had to do with Prozac/Pfizer, and how they were given more leeway with their advertising. I remember this bcs my brothers friend (now a psychiatrist) was hesitant to prescribe Prozac as he said it had a massive PR campaign that people were being swayed by.
Thanks, sunny, now that you mention it, I do recall in the early 90s some talk about the oversubscribing of Prozac. I was up in Boston then; and recall a heavy use of this drug among our patient/client-base.
I'll use that as one of my search words.
Always like your 2cents!

Why do people not care about this? How can people not get upset by the fact that corporations can completely circumvent the will of the people? I've said many times that we are the only ones who can destroy the American way of life. The apathy I see toward this subject seems to confirm my claim. In this case, the devil is already in our bed.
People do care, but you've already labeled the rest of us who may not agree with you. Seems pointless to enter a 'discussion' with someone who maintains the argument that an ounce of dissent is 'delusionional.'

I do think people are delusional when they not only form an opinion, but defend an opinion despite evidence to the contrary. Now, bring some facts and I'll happily debate anyone. But come here spouting nothing but opinion regurgitated from the mouth of someone like Rush Limbaugh and you'll get what's coming to you.
Which is worse, to be controlled by government or by corporations? Is there really any difference?
Are you looking for an opinion here or not? Please note, I didn't give one, and I didn't defend anyone else's.
I was specifically addressing your question of 'why' people are so 'apathetic' about the topic.
