Ah, what's the use? The solution is to encourage a society into NOT THINKING LIKE VICTIMS and learn how to responsibly use weapons, their bodies, whatever...in order to defend themselves and others against the nutjobs of this world, instead of ending up like a herd of sheep at a slaughterhouse! And this in no way is meant to disparage the brave actions of the people who DID try to shield others at VT (or anywhere). But those poor bast#rds would have been better off if campus wasn't a "gun free zone"...that graduate student would damn well have done something about it if his LEGAL concealed/carry permit wasn't negated by school admin.
Guns are not the only solution, that's my point there are other options. And I have used my body to get away from attackers, worked great, didnt need my gun.

Exactly. I'm no shrinking violet either and have lived in some pretty tough neighborhoods over the course of my life. I have chosen to live without owning a gun, that doesn't mean that I don't know how to defend myself.

Yep I may be small but I can do some damage, without my gun. So can my daughter and she is only 10.
One of my daughter’s friends jumped out of a window at VT Monday morning. Needless to say, we have been talking about this a lot.
I believe that gun laws need to be restrictive as far as the steps that must be taken to obtain a gun – that’s the only way to keep most of the people who shouldn’t have them from getting guns. According to the Brady Campaign web site, Virginia does not require background checks for “Secondary "Private" Sales”, nor do they require any type of training to carry a concealed weapon. Had that first rule been in effect it is entirely possible that this tragedy would never have occurred.
The other component is enforcement of existing laws. Virginia does have a law prohibiting the purchase of a second gun within a month. The report I heard seemed to indicate that the shooter obtained both guns at the same time. While it might not have prevented the tragedy, it would have certainly decreased the ability to shoot so many so quickly.
First, let me say I'm so sorry for what your daughter's friend went through. Right now you are probably in a lot of shock and are trying to find answers, as many are.
Most likely, the only way this tragedy might have been stopped or lessened is if one of the victims had been carrying or had access to a gun themselves. No armchair quarterbacking here; this came direct from a VT student's mouth on CNN last night...and many are saying the same thing. This kid would have found a way to get a gun, no matter what the laws said.
Again, my sympathies are with you and your friend.
Thank you for your good wishes. My daughter is quite upset - although she'll never say so. We went and did some research about the security and notification procedures at her university, which helped her a lot. I think it also made her aware that one must always be vigilant, that you can't always rely on others.
On the other point, I wasn't trying to argue the point of whether or not this event could have been prevented if someone else had also had a gun - my apologies that it came across that way. I was simply trying to state that those who have/obtain guns should be held to stringent requirements in order to do so.

I respect your statement, if I don't agree with it fully. The stringency of the current laws don't seem to have done much to deter criminals...this is my opinion based on what I have seen/researched. I don't think guns should be as easy to buy as candy...but I don't feel any more/different laws are going to solve the problems with violence in our country. The problem isn't about guns. A gun is a tool.
