I just returned from a research trip to Norway where the people I interviewed often brought up the topic of our new President. The first was Kristin Clemet, the director of a conservative think tank. "This spring on a delegation to Washington I was struck again," she said, "by how different the political spectrum is in Norway from your country. Here, Obama would be on the right wing." I checked her view with others -- academics, politicians, activists all over the Norwegian spectrum -- and all but one agreed. In Norwegian terms, our President's positions are very conservative.

What? Trying to disown him already?

He is a radical leftist - there is no longer any doubt.

The US hasn't had a true left-wing presence in almost 100 years (if even then really). Talk to any European and he'll say US politics is a fight between the extreme and middle Right.

It's funny how parochial Americans are in their perspective. In the grand scheme of political discourse even the most "radical leftist" Americans are about as radical as the British Labor Party which isn't "radical" in the slightest.

Well if you look at past predsients as recent as JFK :Obama looks like a radical left winger as they called them. If you look at the history of communist and socialist governamnts they really wre like Hitler's national socailist party in beliefs and actions. They eliminated their oppostion;and jailed politcal prisoners and killed millions of others. If you look at many left wings now they want to jail conservative leaders without trial even. They also want to supreess much speech and in europe they in fact do.

Interesting interpretation, but incorrect.

No, I was just pointing out that according to Norwegian conservatives (and probably most European conservatives), Obama is considered a conservative. All of the whining about how liberal he is probably looks silly to most people in the rest of the modern world.

Who are you talking about? That doesn't describe any prominent Democrats that I know of.

Learn about some of the other governments in the modern world and you'll understand why many of them see Obama as a conservative.
