The CIA's Secret Program: Why Wasn't Panetta Informed? - TIME

Has anyone mentioned yet, that the reason this program hasn't been briefed to Congress, is because it was shut down years ago and not pursued?

I can see them briefing Congress: "Well, sir, nothing has happened on this program, becuase it hasn't existed for years."

Next month: "Sir, still nothing has happened with this program, because it is just as shut-down now as it was last month."

Next month: ......etc.

Immediately after 9/11, every govt agency including the CIA, explored ways of fighting back against Al Qaeda. This was one of them. Most proposals were rejected and shut down (including this one), and a few were put into action.

Apparently Democrats are dredging up everything they can, that they think they can make Republicans look bad with if they just exaggerate or leave out certain details.

Haven't they got anything better to do?

From your link:

"But several former CIA officers and intelligence experts contacted by TIME found that explanation problematic. For one thing, they say, the mere fact that the program apparently merited Cheney's close attention should have been a red flag. "Even if the program was dormant, the top officials would have known about Cheney's instructions, and they should have told Panetta right away," says a former operations expert. Another retired senior official put it more bluntly: "[Given Cheney's interest,] I don't know why the program was not on the new director's desk within his first two weeks on the job." Both former officials asked not to be named. The second official also questioned the argument that the program was not important enough for Panetta's immediate attention. "The speed of Panetta's actions when he was informed tells me that the program was pretty important," he says."

Dormant or no, the fact remains that Congress was not informed, nor, it turns out was the CIA director.
Lies of omission are still lies.

So the crime here, is that Cheney was interested?

BTW, the position for Congressional Briefer is now open. Want to volunteer? All you have to do, is repeat the lines detailed in the original post.

That is exactly what they are trying to do. They are trying to discredit the CIA and Bush at the same time. This is a purely political move by them and will dry up and blow away before they are found out.

Can you tell us how long after some Congress critter found out about this before the world knew about it? Answer that question and then you will be telling yourself why they weren't informed about something that never happened. You know the old thing about how to get a thing known, telegraph, telephone and tell a woman. Well not if you tell a Congressional committee you have automatically told the world. They aren't very good at keeping secrets but unlike the two experts in your quotes at least they have to tell their names when giving out info. Of course, Congressmen can have aides blow the horn to the world and refuse to tell their name.

Ummmm... Congress approved the exploration of this program, before any of it was even done.

Now they're screaming they didn't know about it. Or at least those on the Dem side say they didn't.

Only in America.... with a Democrat Congress!
