Does anybody doubt that if a white candidate with a thin resume like Obama's had run, he would have been laughed off the stage at the Democratic debates during the primaries instead of being treated as if he brought gravitas to the game?
You just described John Edwards in 2004. He was also a first-term Senator with a thin resume. Democrats didn't laugh him off the stage. They made him their VP candidate. Obama won his party's nomination not because of his race, but despite it. Many blacks and Hispanics were originally in support of Hillary Clinton. But Obama ran the better campaign. He used the internet more effectively to raise funds, he didn't underestimate the value of caucases, and his campaign staff adapted to changes quickly. These were all areas that his principal rival, Hillary Clinton, failed at, areas that have nothing to do with race.
Unfortunately, some people will never be able to see past Obama's race. They will always view him as an affirmative action pic, which is also how they see Sotomayor, despite the fact that she has 17 years of experience as a judge.

I think there is a substantial (not a majority) number of liberals that do hate America.

The Wright/Ayers wing of the Democratic party is only in the eyes of Republicans. Most liberals/progressives pretty much ignore them and those like them. Only conservitive talk show host celebrate them. (They give them more air time then the rest of the MSM, that they (the talk show hosts) are part of)
Most candidates will have to have a thin resume these days, since career politicians are considered "tainted" by many, and something you said in high school will be brought up as a major issue. (being a failure at almost everything or doing very little, has never kept anyone out of the white house, now has it?)
