For those that don't believe the AMA is a union, you may be unaware that most doctors are not employees of hospitals, but independent Contractors. The amount that doctors are paid is based in no small part on how much the federal government pays for Medicaid, Medicare. The AMA lobbys on behalf of the Doctors with the federal government (quasi employer) for better payment in these programs. This is the classical definition of a union. And the AMA does more, oh so much more. Don't believe me look at their website.
Nah the teachers union is more powerful. Our school system is in far worse condition than healthcare yet no politician is willing to stand up to them to make the neccessay changes. There is a lot of hot air about health insurance competition but suggest school choice and the union goes insane!

While I agree the teachers unions may be hurting education, they simply do not have the financial muscle to compare with the AMA. If they did, teachers would be getting paid a lot more money.

Teachers get paid plenty in NJ. The real test is if needed changes can get made. MDs are getting Medicare reimbursement cut. You will never see school choice although most Americans want it. That is real power!
This is old data but the money is pretty good plus that is for 3/4 of a years work. Increase it by 25% and that is their real salary (many supplement with summer jobs)

The teachers union in NJ may have a lot of power but that is local to one state. The unions in other states don't all have the same power. When the teachers union can limit the number of schools and the amount of teachers nationwide not just one state, then we can talk. There is the power. The power to control the supply in an occupation can control their compensation. The AMA pretty much sets the number of graduates.

Teachers control education, that's a lot of power. I am not diminishing the power of the AMA but relatively speaking the teachers unions are more powerful, they control education, you can't get anything done without their consent. Docotors have had their reimbursement cut, you will never see teachers salaries cut no matter what happens with the economy they are bullet proof, not so doctors.
In this instance supply is independent of pay. The governmment sets reimbursement. If medical schools churned out 100 times more docotors it would not impact the cost of providing service.
