It is the case that the only time in recent memory that the debt has actually declined was the last few years of the Clinton presidency. However, "Reagan turned the United States into a debtor nation" is either ludicrous or using the term "debtor nation" in some new and unknown way. The U.S. has incurred a public debt since the Revolution, and has has a continual debt since 1835.

Maybe the best we can do is keep having a revolving door in Washington DC. Every 2 or 4 years, sweep the party in power out and let the minority take over. The ideal solution would be to have a third party or have independants take over, but the voters aren't quite sophisticated enough to go for that.
But we have more power than ever with the interent. We can force policy change down the governments throat, push the media into honest coverage of political news, and use it to build up or destroy candidates and politicians. The internet has taken the place of a free media to keep politics honest. If we ever allow that to be lost, we're finished.

I would like to see the parties change their names to Liberal and Conservative, develop their "this is what we stand for" statement and let the politicians realign themselves accordingly for a new vote so we voters aren't spinning our wheels trying to get the loosey-goosey types in both current political parties to quit being cafeteria Republicans and Democrats.

Me me me me me!

They both have good ideas, but they get so muddled down in their ideals, that the good ideas never get to bubble to the top. Republicans are so worried about getting their agenda down the throat of everyone, that even if Democrats have a good idea they oppose it, and vice versa.

Except if you pay attention enough, you know what both parties want to do:

Democrats: Vote for us and we promise (maybe) we'll hook you up with more stuff. So y'all don't have to do anything, we'll just take more responsibility.

Republicans: Vote for us, or bad stuff will happen. You don't want the terrorists or illegals or communists to take away your freedom, do you? (Just ignore the fact our agenda is to serve our corporate masters and their agendas.)

My problem with the Democrats is their unwillingness to take on the corporate power that dominates American politics. They are way to economically conservative for me. On the other hand the Republicans are so beholden to the Christian fanatics and the extremely wealthy plutocrats that they a threat to me and my freedom. The result is I try to make the Democratic Party more aware of individual rights (I am opposed to gun control laws) while becoming more active in suppressing corporate market manipulation and monopoly as well as providing much more progressivity in our taxation.

Your kidding about the Democrats not willing to take on corporate power right?

I mean, both parties are obviously pandering to the money men. Hell, the last President was blatant about it, he just didn't seem to care.

We need a viable third party, and I think we should ban corporate campaign contributions.

In the past, I would have agreed that partisan political action would resolve the problem.

But since the heart of the dilemma is our own consent, via voluntary participation in national socialism, it matters little.

Until enough Americans awaken to that fact, and cease consenting, the predators will hold the reins of power.

What really frightens the status quo is this little known fact:
There is NO LAW that compels all Americans to enroll into Social Security and NO LAW punishing those who do not. It is 100% voluntary - voluntary servitude.
When Americans stop participating, and leave SocSec, the game is up.
Without our consent and participation, the Congress loses 99% of its power, revenue and influence. The banksters lose their puppet. And the whole house of cards comes crashing down.

Why?
Because when over 300 million people learn that they have been used as "human resources" pledged as collateral to underwrite the national debt, and that they had sold themselves and their children into servitude, it won't be pretty.

It *is* voluntary, there is no punishment for it, but if you are enrolled, it is extremely difficult if not impossible to get out. Most people are enrolled at birth, and thus *never* get the opportunity to research, discover, and make an informed decision regarding Social Security. It is a tragedy of missed opportunity and parental responsibility that our kids are enrolled in this program without consent for a farking tax break, and an even greater travesty that the government encourages and pressures it.

Have felt like this for years and years. I was a government major in college (with a concentration on political theory) and what it taught me was that I hate politics...and that the government system we have now is a far cry from what the founding fathers had envisioned when forming it. Is that for better or worse, I dunno, but it's nothing like what they believed in.

Frankly, politics is becoming like religion, just another reason for someone to hate someone else.
