Pay attention to AZ people. It's a great lesson on how not to run a state. The GOP is in firm control there and they have basically bankrupted the state government and destroyed its economy. First, the completely destroyed the education system driving AZ all the way down to #50 in projected per-pupil spending for 2010.

State near bottom for education spending

High-tech businesses have been fleeing the state because they can't find educated workers. As a result, the professional class in AZ is also leaving to find better jobs in CA, CO, TX, etc...

Valley workers leaving for greener pastures - Phoenix Business Journal:

The only industry growing in AZ is call centers. And they are actually happy about getting 8-9 dollar and hour jobs there. They think low-wage call centers are their future!

Tucson's New Economy | High-tech Cluster Industries (http://www.azstarnet.com/neweconomy/it2.html - broken link)

Now they are selling the state capital building to cover a budget shortfall. It's such an incredibly short-sighted political stunt that one just has to shake their head at it.

Governor OKs plan to sell state Capitol buildings

Of course, AZ is not at the bottom of every list. Crime, particularly violent crime, is at an all time high. In fact, Phoenix was recently named the kidnapping capital of America. It's also the #2 city in the world for kidnappings behind Mexico City. Which means more people get kidnapped in Phoenix than in Baghdad. They must be really proud of themselves...

Kidnapping Capital of the U.S.A. - ABC News

The theme here is simple. Don't give the GOP control over your state or you will end up like AZ... Poor, uneducated, unemployed and crime ridden.

Let's remember who the governor was in Arizona that ran up public spending and did not enforce the borders, Napolitano. All the present governor is trying to do is figure out a way to pay for it.

I think there are more blue states (Kalifornia, Michigan, New Jersey, New York) in financial dire straights than there are red ones. Also, illegals drive down wages, exhaust social services, and not enforcing the border increases the influx of crime, along with incoming diseases and sicknesses not indiginent to the US which puts a drain on the healthcare system. Plus, blue states are tax and spend happy. No one factor can be attributed to the problem, but on the whole, blue states suck. WA state is about 9 billion dollars in debt. During our Governor's election last year, Gov Greguire said there was no budget debt but in fact, a surplus. She got re elected, and lo and behold 3 days later there was suddenly an 8 bilion dollar debt. I could go on. Do your research.

And? How is this any different than the post office leasing properties and not owning them? Or the Social Security office leasing properties? Or even the department of defense? You do understand that MOST commercial properties that the government and businesses operate in, dont own their buldings right? This includes McDonalds, WalMart among others.

Fair disclosure, I own several of these buildings and lease them out to the government.. and at the rate they will re-lease the property, its a fair deal for the taxpayers at around 8.5cap rate, and this will also generate property tax revenues because it moves the capital building from a non profit, to a for profit status..

I got it, this was just one of those, find anything to rant about postings without thinking things through...

FYI Arizona has a considerable amount of Democrats. It was even rather close back in the '08 election, which is surprising being McCain's home district and all that. Being a popular destination for retirees makes low spending on education to be expected, among other things.

Who is doing the kidnappings, and who are they kidnapping? Maybe we need to crack down this from the source?? But you prob don't want to go there do you?

Organized gangs for the most part. At first they were kidnapping other drug dealers, but they have moved on to kidnapping "civilians" for ransom now. Phoenix is now #2 in the world for kidnappings.

And I agree with you that we need to crack down on the source. I am all for rigorous border enforcement.

Because it's stupid to sell the state capitol!

It's the state capitol building, not a post office! Do we rent the US Capitol Building? Do we rent the White House? Do we rent the Pentagon? Of course not!

AZ shouldn't sell their capitol building. The state owns it outright! Why would they want to rent it? The money they will get for it today equates to about a decades rent and after that they will LOSE money every year in perpetuity! It's short sighted thinking like this that leads to inefficient government!

Right, of course we dont, the federal government is allowed to run deficits, states cant, but just because person A doesnt do something, doesnt mean it doesnt make economic sense for person B to do it..

You dont understand the time value of money very well do you? Lets not even discuss that the deal is most likely a sale/leaseback with option arrangement and that your equation ignore the property tax income and the maintenance liability expenses involved with "owning" rather than renting..
