That's cool.
As long as everyone has access or the opportunity to take time off, I'm fine with it.
I see you adding not having kids is a choice too. Well...duh.
I just don't see why some people who are parents feel they deserve these special privileges for time off work but could care less about those who don't have kids.
In a perfect world everyone could take off for a certain amount of time and be paid a certain percentage of wages. If you have kids, it counts against your time. If you need to take care of an elderly family member or need to go out of town for a family function, it counts too. I just don't think ONLY PARENTS should have paid time off from work.
I agree. I also don't think that ONLY unmarried gays and lesbians should receive domestic partner benefits. ANY unmarried couple should receive access to those same benefits. Otherwise, the law is essentially saying that straight people MUST get married in order to receive benefits. That's as unfair as saying that gays and lesbians CAN'T get married. Equal rights for all.
My cousin in the Czech Republic received 2 years of maternity leave at 3/4 pay, and her job was held for her. Some countries understand the importance of family. Some, like ours, don't.
Exactly.
And some people on the right like to say that we need family togetherness and be family orientated. They say we need the Bible and prayer in school but then these same people will defend the "right" of businesses to get rid of pregnant women or unpaid maternity leave. So much for family values.
Look at our society. Violent video games, dropping out of high school. HORRIBLE test scores, etc, etc. We need parents home to guide their children. We NEED to understand the importance of family and PARENTAL GUIDANCE! There is NO question in this. It has nothing to do with praying in schools. It honestly does not.
My cousin in Canada got a years worth of pay after she had her daughter and son. The result? They are closer as a result because she spent time with her children in the crucial parts of their development. I used to work at Burger King a year or so ago and they had my manager (who was nine months pregnant) working up until the last week of her expectancy date. Here I have seen women at work leave for just two weeks and then come back after having their baby. I am like "Whoa....you had your baby last week!"
Why should an employer be penalized, and have to pay someone, simply because they had a child?
Additionally, the employer may very well also have to pay for a "temp" to replace the worker taking time off -
This is not fair to the employer
Because:
1) The employer is hiring people, not robots;
2) The employer is a member of the community, as well;
3) Without workers, there are no employers;
4) The cost of contributing to the community--through temp workers or whatever--is the cost of doing business.
It's insane to build a society in which 6-week-old infants are forced into $1000/month day care and are raised by strangers. All because employers think that their employees are owned by them. Revolting.

You raise a very good point. I forgot to mention that those who are most vigorously against paid maternity leave, expanded vacation time for families, etc., are usually the very people who are the first to moan about the "laziness" of people who work for a living, and the failing "family values" in our culture. You can't work people to the frigging bone and expect the American family--and American life, in general--not to fall apart. For chrissakes, even the slaves got a week off at Christmas.

How in the world can you keep up in your knowledge when you are gone from the job for 2 years? Only when your work is guaranteed to you no matter what kind of lousy job you are doing. That is why the US has out preformed other nations in quality for years. That is fast going down hill with socialists ideas.
