Last night as I was working I was listening to the Herman Cain show on WSB AM here. Me and Cain do not agree on almost any issue but unlike most conservative talk show host who spend their whole shows telling us how horrible Obama and the Democrats are, Cain actually puts ideas on the table sometimes.
Last night Cain made a suggestion that instead of a PUBLIC OPTION for medical insurance that we look at simply allowing people under 65 to buy into Medicare. Unlike people over 65, they would have to pay premiums for it but the premiums could be based on a sliding income scale with the poorest Americans getting the coverage for free.
This would accomplish the goals of universal coverage under a single plan as opposed to 3 agencies we have now (Medicare, Medicaid and the Public Option). As a LIBERAL I could certainly look at this. It is nice when a Republican actually offers an idea once in awhile.
Wow! Great idea.
We just quadrupled the federal deficit, passed an all time record budget that, as enormous as it is, did nothing to cover the uninsured, added two trillion to the national debt, spent hundreds of billions on a misguided experiment to stimulate the economy and have exactly ZERO new jobs to show for it, and Medicare, like Medicaid and Social Security, is broke and near the point of insolvency.
Given this dire financial background in which 46 cents of every dollar spent by the federal government is borrowed, How do we pay for the expanded coverage for these people without rationing care?

Wouldn't a Medicare policy available to those under 65 be a public option?
We all now know why the current partisan unconstitutional plan won't work, let's hear why the Conservative plans won't work, or can't be a part of the American plan.
I totally agree with the preexisting conditions and no denial of coverage, but that's about it.
How about making insurance companies, non-profit organizations?
Instead, why doesn't each state set up a system like the federal health care system? We hear the fed system is so good, why not copiy it?
Each state sets its own regulations and each insurance carrier submits its plan and costs. As long as the carrier is solvent it should be able to submit. Through competition the carriers will bring cost down, just as the fed system.

The people under 65 buying into it would pay for it with their own money just like they do private insurance.

He did run- and lost. He ran for the US Senate to the right of Saxby Chambliss and he lost. People down here still want their politicians white above all else.
