Why is it so difficult to discuss this issue without resorting to absurd Santorum like logic?

First haven't read the other comments.

Sen. Eric Adams, D-Brooklyn, challenged lawmakers to set aside their personal religious beliefs. He asked them to remember that once even slavery was legal.

"When I walk through these doors, my Bible stays out," Adams said.

"That's the wrong statement," said gay marriage opponent Sen. Ruben Diaz, a conservative minister from the Bronx. "You should carry your Bible all the time."

Very interesting part right here. Yes indeed slavery is advocated in the bible. Slaves are told to obey their masters.

I wish every law maker thought like Mr. Adams versus Mr. Diaz. I have no interest in living in a Christian theocracy. We live in a country where so many are praying to the same God but differ on everything else with so many differences it just makes sense to have a secular government. So no the bible should be left at home. Not saying there's anything wrong with being Christian or even evangelical but not on the senate floor please.

I'm sorry but I'm just so over people who don't even know me telling me who I should be with.

This was State Senator Diane Savino's address prior to voting. An excellent speech well worth a listen.

and that is the whole issue.

why should we 'allow' you to marry, when the only thing you are interested in is the marriage BENEFIT, ie the money,, the gay marriage issue is about greed.

if you love him/her then marriage would not be an issue,, just live together since its supposed to be about love....not greed

That's quite an accusation!

Does anyone question a straight couple's motive for getting married?

So when hektic talked about marriage benefits you automatically think in terms of money. What about making medical decisions for a loved one, retrieving a loved one's body from a hospital, making funeral arrangements for a loved one. Yeah, just very greedy wanting to do all those things.

There are very many benefits involved in being married, and very few of them have financial implications, but they are a right that are deserved by all.

Oh, this is rich. We've got some people who are against same-sex marriage who say, "I'm in favor of civil unions because they include all of the benefits of marriage." And then we've got other people who want to cast it in a light of greed.

In order to agree with workingclasshero's logic, we should eliminate all marriages and civil unions for all couples because "it's supposed to be about love". In other words, if you want to get married - whatever your orientation may be - you're really doing it because you want federal benefits; you're doing it out of greed.

Anti Gay New York Senator Gets Probation For Beating Up His Domestic Partner - Lez Get Real (http://lezgetreal.com/?p=23547 - broken link)

Quote:
New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate, one of the Democrats who helped “defend traditional marriage” in the New York Senate last week by voting against a bill that would have made same-sex marriage legal in the Empire State, was sentenced to 250 hours of community service. 52 weeks of domestic abuse counseling and three years of probation, on an assault conviction stemming from a December 2008 incident where he “accidentally” slashed his girlfriends face while beating the crap out of her after he dragged her through the lobby of his Queens apartment building. Prosecutors had said that Monserrate, an ex-Marine, lashed out at his domestic partner, Karla Giraldo, with a glass in a fit of rage after he found another man’s business card in her purse. The glass broke against her face, cutting her near her left eye down to her skull and leaving a lasting scar.
Monserrate had been originally charged with two felony counts and two misdemeanor counts of assault after cutting Giraldo’s face during a bitter argument in his apartment on Dec. 19, 2008. However, in October, New York William M. Erlbaum, who presided over his trial, acquitted him on the two felony assault charges, which carried a mandatory sentence of seven years in prison and would have forced him to forfeit his Senate seat.
