New York lawmakers have rejected a bill to legalize gay marriage.
The Senate decision Wednesday comes after months of delays and arm twisting of lawmakers sympathetic to the bill but representing conservative districts. It follows a referendum in Maine earlier this month that struck down a gay marriage law before it took effect.

Advocates say they aren't surprised by the decision. Most, including Gov. David Paterson, say they at least wanted a floor debate and vote.

New York already recognizes gay marriage but doesn't perform the gay marriage. HA HA the details are sooooooooo huge!

Now this is a shocker.

What the hell happened? Don't democrats have a large majority?

I have an idea - put it up to a state-wide vote.

I will say what I always say on the issue: If marriage is such a sacred and holy tradition, then keep the government out of it and have the state only recognize civil unions for all.

Conservatives are always looking for ways to "keep government out of our lives", this is just a friendly suggestion.

The fact this happened in New York State is, to say the least, a little surprising.

The State of New York is far from being considered "conservative". FAR from it.

this is not a total surprise. I had read in the NY times about a dem puerto rican assemblymen who had "many gay friends" and even a dying gay brother, but who was ultra-religious and could not be persuaded to vote pro-gay. It's an uphill struggle to get any rights passed in ANY state in the Union. it's sad that these rights are routinely denied despite the language in the Constitution that says otherwise.

The state did not vote for it. 50 something people did.

Well, it really is sad to read this. But I think there's still hope. If we got rid of slavery, then we can also get rid of this kind of discrimination.

At the same time, New York State is certainly no Massachusetts.

Well, then as of today, I'd say New York should be considered a little more conservative than it was yesterday.

Besides, as in all states, conservatives outnumber liberals in New York, so in that respect, it's a myth that New York is a liberal state.

Political Ideology: "Conservative" Label Prevails in the South

There are no liberal states. Right-wingers just like to label certain states as liberal in an attempt to stigmatize them and make them seem like they're not in the mainstream.
