We get an awful lot of sun belt folks moving up here to Maine. It certainly is not for the weather. They are escaping urban sprawl and the increased crime that is associated with it.They would rather live with snow and cold than worry about being shot or mugged every day.

Although I like the four distinct seasons, I'll be escaping NJ when my career is over.

Wherever I end up, I won't be dragging it with me, either.

Well, yes it does, actually if trends continue. Seriously, how many more Northerners plan on coming South then? And how many of you who are already down here plan on turning around and going back home at some point?

What percentage of the South is made up of transplants who have moved down here ever since, say, 1950, or later, or whenever it was that this started happening?

ugh, I have NO desire to move to the South! high humidity, unbearable summer heat, killer hurricanes, massive bugs, cookie-cutter subdivisions, and states that consistently rank at the bottom of good lists (e.g., education) and at the top of bad lists (e.g. obesity). no thanks!

I'm w/ wedjat. it's either the Northeast or Northwest for me (live in the Midwest now, but miss living near the ocean). I would much rather deal w/ some snow than have to deal w/ any of the above.

no worries, NYC, Boston, Chicago, and the rest will survive just fine. no worries about NOLA, Charlotte, Nashville, or even Atlanta wiping these cities or regions from the map

Why would they disappear?

Good question. That depends on what percentage of Northerners have already moved South since, say 1950 or whenever. We can look at and predict future trends here.

Im not speaking for everyone but this is how I see it. I live in Boston the cost of living out here is out of control. Ive been thinking of moving to dallas (cheaper houses) I think alot of younger and elderly folk will leave unless you have alot of money u cant afford to live hear.

But yet you move South and still vote the way you did up North, and you start turning red states blue the more you move down here. Maybe there is a reason that socialism and high taxes aren't a good idea. Stay in your own state if you are going to come down here and vote the same.

I was born and raised a midwesterner and am very proud of my region. However, if many of my fellow midwesterners want to move out of the region, more power to them. I understand the allure of other regions of this country, and they are nice places to visit, but I don't want to live anywhere else than the midwest.

Let 'em move, more room for me to play.

1. How can a place dissappear?
2. The NE and MW has nearly 4 times the population of the south.
3. The majority of population growing in the south = Retirees. They are not a 'growth' segment of society, nor are they re-producing.

and most importantly

4.Most of the fastest growing states (pre-depression...I dont think anyones moving nowadays) are in the west, not the south.

I myself am a transplant from the south who moved west.

To the OP - Where are you getting your info?
