When you say competition, can you expound on that?
It means different things to different people.
We don't need more health insurance companies because it prevents us from reaching economies of scale.
It's better to have a single-payer system because it can reach economies of scale that all these separate health insurance companies cannot.
I know health costs have gone up in some part thanks to health insurance companies. Once other people started footing the bill, the bill went up.
I am sure if we went to an all cash system the price of medicines, doctor visits, surgeries, etc would go down but I don't think it would be immediate. Many lives would be lost because some people just can't afford it.
I am in favor of a single-payer system that takes care of the basic health care needs (primary care, vision, dental, etc.) and people could have private supplemental or catastrophic health insurance.
