Then don't. Others do use the word to describe themselves. Have some respect for them.
Now I'm being disrespectful because I don't want to be called an archaic name? I understand that some people referred to themselves as negro. If they are not offended by it that is fine. But most black people don't want to be referred to as negro. That's the point I'm trying but obviously failing to make.

It has nothing to do with you. I'm saying that there are still some blacks who call themselves Negroes. The Census Bureau is respecting this. It's not up to you to decide what all blacks should call themselves.

I understand that there are some who still call themselves negro. This is an archaic word and shouldn't be on a form. I mean I understand that you disagree but I stand by what I say. It's old, archaic and offensive. It's not about the census bureau being respectful. It's about someone (who is probably white) so out of touch and stupid who actually thinks that it's 1950.

No. They specifically said that they surveyed blacks, and because 3% of them called themselves Negroes, they decided to put the word on the form. It had nothing to do with being out of touch; on the contrary, it was because they were in touch and sensitive to the terminology being used by a wide range of blacks.

Three percent is not a wide range. I'm not changing my mind or backing down. Putting negro on the census form was stupid at best and racist at worst.
I think I'm just shocked that it's even debateable whether or not that is an offensive word for a census form. I mean who doesn't know that negro is not a word that anyone non-black should use? Please don't answer that question its rhetorical. Like I said I'm shocked just beyond shocked really. But that's how it is I suppose.
