He's probably some 15 year old fat kid in his mom's basement. Ignore it. No grown man could spew that type of thing.

I cannot believe how many people are making light of this appalling human tragedy.

Thousands might be dead and all some of you people can think about is either trying to score some stupid political points or making facile, ill judged, inappropriate nasty little comments about this situation.

Had anyone made such comments about 9/11 there would have been hell to pay but no after all those victims today are not really worthy of our sympathy. They are after all poor, mostly black and far away. So who gives a damn anyway?

You make me sick. Republican, Democrat, Black or White, Christian , Atheist, Muslim whatever, get a grip and try to behave like human beings with a modicum of empathy towards the victims of this terrible event.

Some posters will never cease to amaze me in their shallow, vapid, and so bloody self centered little universe . An entire Nation mourns today and you still think this is about you and your bloody political/religious views. Are you bloody kidding me ?

GROW UP. Behaving like some churlish petulant toddler is not big and it's not clever.

The Haitian people have my deepest sympathy. I can only hope we will extend food, search parties and medical aide ASAP. They are in great need and we can only be good neighbors.

FWIW - Depending upon the exact nature of the quake an event of this magnitude can level a city built with modern materials and design. When it hits a city without proper construction the effect is much like a nuclear weapon without the fire. It is totally devastating.

This is not intended to be a "flip" comment:

Send in the NAVY! The NAVY has resources seriously needed - and the NAVY has trained for these types of missions.

I have to ask, where is the UN response to this? I would think that the UN, with their resources, and with the amount of money this country donates (in the form of "dues") that they would have the ability to respond to natural disasters, that's one of their functions.

Though undoubtably the US will be the major contributor to rescue and reconstruction efforts. And as you say, the Navy is best equiped to help, a carrier with a helicopter detachment can do a lot to aid rescue efforts.

US, UN, Pledge Support for Haiti | Americas | English

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the U.N. will immediately release $10 million to assist in relief efforts. He appealed for help from member nations, saying a "major relief effort will be required."

Does anyone know if the hospital Navy ship, the Comfort, is nearby? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USNS_Comfort_%28T-AH-20%29

Edit: Found more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Haiti_earthquake

From what I read - the UN took quite a hit in the devastation. UN peacekeepers were killed. Their medical clinics destroyed. Their food program leveled.
