So I've been watching coverage of the unbelievable tragedy in Haiti. The destruction is overwhelming in those neighborhoods. There are dead bodies everywhere, and they are being shown on TV. I think that it is important that we see those images. I think it's important that the story be told.

It makes me wonder why the networks will show dead bodies when a natural disaster strikes, but not when the dead bodies are the result of war? We've seen plenty of news coverage of war over the past 8 years, but relatively few images of the resulting death. Why is that?

I almost posted a similar question yesterday. It seems the US media has no problem showing dead bodies as long as they are not Americans.

Photos of war deaths will be politicized to blame the other side.
Earthquake deaths are blameless.

It's easier to take photos after an earthquake than it is to take photos in a war zone.

Because these are the bodies of third world people, not Soldiers of the U.S.

I've seen pictures & also footage of dead bodies after suicide bombings. For instance, the one that just happened at a graduation in Somalia.

True. But we don't see bodies of Iraqi's or Afghani's (sp?) either. So I guess we don't see bodies if we caused them, either.

So...

1) No dead Americans allowed
2) No dead cause by Americans allowed

Other rules?

Because we caused the war deaths, either directly or indirectly, and we'd rather not be troubled to think about that.

Because in a natural disaster we cannot help the death and destruction, but of course, in war, we have chosen to kill - and be killed.

It's a guilt thing, I think.

Most likely, they don't want the images of our dead soldiers being used for political propaganda.
