I know many Indians in my parents' generation are poor tippers but that is largely a cultural issue because in India, you are not asked to tip and thus my parents generation typically tip 10-15%. Our generation is obviously not like that because we are familiar with the custom of tipping 20% but we still get treated poorly because they just assume we are like our parents. In fact, I feel like I have to over tip at times to send a message that my generation does tip well and to provide good service the next time I come in to that restaurant.

Unless you are a minority, you don't really understand this concept. It's always a crapshoot with regards to receiving service. You just hope you don't get that racist server who is going to profile you. And I know this is somewhat true because I have white friends who are servers and they admitted that some of their fellow servers do harbor these attitudes. And I notice the difference in service if I'm dining with white people. I'm assuming that many of the waiters on this thread probably treat Black people differently assuming they won't tip well. All you are doing is reinforcing that stereotype because if you provide them with bad service, they probably won't tip well.
I may not be a minority but I have a visible disability and notice that I tend to receive poor service many times as the servers are assuming that I won't tip. Well ... They just saved me a few bucks because I refuse to tip someone that treats me like a second class citizen. If the stereotype about blacks being poor tippers is actually true, could it be because they are sick and tired of being treated like second class citizens based upon a stereotype?

Does race play a role in the way we tip?

No

But I'm pretty sure that "looks" and "gender" do ..

Of course, people who sign up for those jobs know what they're getting into, so perhaps they should just accept that occasionally they're going to have to wait on people they don't like.

I'm flabbergasted by the utter stinginess of some people in this thread. You know who you are.

I am pretty low-maintenance, and I tip high for waiters that do well. Conversely, as I am easy to please, if you **** me off, you won't get much at all, just enough to let you know that I didn't forget to tip, the service just didn't deserve a tip.
Well actually, two people splitting a meal is more work than if one person were eating that one dish. Usually when there is a situation of sharing an entree, instead of the plate getting placed in front of one person, that plate is placed in the middle of the table family-style and extra plates are bought. In your case, instead of one water glass to be filled, there would be two water glasses to maintain etc... And the cleanup is also more effort for that one dinner than if only one person were seated at that table.

Anyway, I've mostly worked banquet events, not a la carte restaurants. But blacks do have a universal reputation for being the worst tippers and the most demanding customers. Maybe it's a ghetto black culture sort of thing, or feeling entitled to treating a waiter like a lowly servant as payback for their ancestors having been slaves. And stereotypes happen for a reason, they don't occur as a result of active imaginations. Waiters always remember when they get stiffed. BTW the worst banquet functions I've worked were the annual MLK breakfasts for 1200 people at the hotel I used to work at, and last year there was a luncheon of Kenyan nationals. They treated all the servers rudely like menial labour.

Jewish people are also difficult to wait on, but at least they tip decently. Japanese nationals are cheap tippers, but in Japan, the gratuity is included in the price of the meal. So them tipping 5-10% is them thinking they are tipping extra.

And in a restaurant, the waiters have to tip out the busboys out of what they get from the customer. In a Japanese restaurant, the waiters have to tip out the sushi bar chefs.

Speaking of restaurants being able to get away with paying their waiters very little per hour and having the whole tipping system, I think that it's awful that Starbuck had that system of their store managers getting a cut of the baristas' tip jars.

With your pessimistic mindset, I'm relieved that we live on opposite coasts and that I will never have to experience YOU as my customer. Whew!! I don't want any customers with your sort of chip on their shoulder. Geesh...

Anyway, I really love the guests at where I work. They are all very well educated and aware of proper social etiquette. They are a pleasure to wait on, and they love me back. I get testimonial emails from them to my managers all of the time.

No kidding. Twenty plus posts in the same thread using all kinds of excuses to say the same thing: I don't like to tip. We get it already!
