I'm curious to know what you all think. Please make it brief. What job duties as a citizen do you think government should do for you? What job duties as a citizen do you wish government would stay the heck out of?

Per the Constitution the Federal government should be responsible for National Defense and protecting individual property rights and freedoms.

I agree as well. I think when the Constitution was drafted, we had only two departments (Department of State, Department of Treasury). We were okay with those two departments for almost the first 80 years of the republic. (Our Department of Defense was not formalized, believe or not, until shortly after WWII) Today, there are 15 departments, half of which have come into prominence over the past 55 years. This is not the way the framers of the Constitution had intended it to be. These departments consume 1.5 TRILLION dollars in operating expenses. The biggest beef I have in this list is the Department of Health and Human Services, which was not formulated until 1953, and yet this one department comprises an overhead of 500 billion annually, (1/3rd the entire departmental budget) and employs 67,000 mostly superflous positions.

I know probably at least half the posters on this board have a problem with me calling out H&HS, but I have spoken. If you want to trace budget deficits, national debt, it starts with the arrogant meddling we have foisted upon our citizens on the federal level in the form of this department.

I think a great place to start would be with the line from the Hippocratic Oath:

FIRST, do no harm

Protection from enemies foreign and domestic; maintenance of a peaceful and lawful society so that other activities can flourish.

Other than that? None.

I think we can do without the government. At any level.

I'm an anarcho-capitalist. I think the government should be reduced to private law enforcement agencies that protect the rights of people and keep the peace. The use of force should be kept to a minimum. They should only be looking out for "real crimes".

Drug use, gun ownership, homosexual sex, prostitutionm, and other related things are none of their business.
