I understand there are passport covers you can buy that prevent that.
Can they only read it, or can they capture and save the information? I'm in the process of getting a passport and that makes me uneasy.
However, instead of another ID card (we have so many already - license, various state/municipal agency issued, etc.) why not have everyone carry a passport and or passport card. That would be uniform and those who are illegal will most likely not be able to get one.
Definitely get yourself an RFID blocking passport cover. Identity theft from a passport makes you an easy mark. Heck..the hacker just needs to sit in an airport with a laptop near where you show your passport and capture all the info.
The government initially said the frequency only traveled 4 inches but was proven to travel up to 33 feet. Now the government says they fixed it.
4 inches vs 33 feet ?? How could government testing be that off ?

4 inches vs. 33 feet. That's consistent governmentese. Aren't we all concerned about the same sort of miscalculation with the cost of healthcare, except magnified many times over? Trust the government. The frequency travels only 4 inches. Trust the government. The healthcare bill will be deficit neutral. Maybe it will even MAKE us money.
Thanks for that info, happytexan. BTW, did anyone scroll down to the Passport section and read all the pros and cons? Scary stuff, but that's good for an entire new thread!
this is a strange issue, because we have both conservatives who oppose it as well as the ACLU.
i definitely think there is something very disingenuous about tucking it in the illegal amnesty bill, and am going to have to change my vote to a big fat NO as i question the intent of the program.
i also don't trust lindsey graham as far as i can throw him, or chuck schumer. they have both done plenty to undermine this country and i would have to guess that this would be no exception.
I am wondering just what freedoms I am giving up by carrying a biometric ID card with all my background and health date encoded in an easily read form. It would be very useful to have all this information handy in the event of an accident or disaster. At least they would know who they were aiding or burying. It could be imbedded in an editable chip so I wouldn’t forget and leave it at home when I wanted to go into a government building or take an airplane some where.
I do not intend to take part in any smuggling or money laundering so why would I worry about being identified by the government? I don't care if "they" know where I am or what I am doing because I would be where I want to be and do what I want to do even if they are looking. That attitude is what makes me FREE.

Attitude carries no weight if the government were to decide to restrict your movements for any reason; attitude would make you FREE only in your own mind, and it could get you into a lot of trouble if you tried to express or exercise it in those circumstances.
So...now that we've passed a law in Arizona that sets the precedent for the police to detain anyone for no reason other than "they look suspicious", is this national ID card the next logical step?
I trust that anyone who was for that Arizona law would be consistent and support this as well.
